Looking at the pics, it looks like the cab might actually be the same at the 2nd gen. Just updated door handles, mirrors, and obviously the interior. But it looks like the structure, or shell, might be the same.

Anyone else thought this? If its the same, im going to get some seats from the 3rd gen for my 2nd gen cuz they appear to have a lever to manually raise and lower the seat height.

That's the 1st thing i noticed!Front end and bed don't look per portioned properly to the cab of the truck.

Its the same cab, mentioned upon release earlier in the year, with a couple heated debates about it. They reworked the interior components (thinner door panels, seat shape, etc.) for increased interior space. But as said before the bones of this truck are a 2nd gen, suspension components, frame is the same just updated, etc.

I thought they built the prototype 16s from the 15 platform. Maybe they didn't want to reform every cab piece so they just used a 15. People who saw the truck in person said the cab and bed didn't line up properly

Yep I saw it in person, the lady said that was what production would look like. It lines up as in fit, it just looks odd, the lines are not real flowing, its evident they basically restamped the front and back and tried to get it to line up/flow. Why change what works? Plus cant go any bigger than its a full size.

Lots of theories on why it's not a clean-sheet redesign. Some of it may be the massive frame recall they are still producing frames for. Keeping the platform the same allows Toyota to pump out recall frames and new gen 3 frames simultaneously. Another might be crash testing. Making a new cab means crash testing results could be different. Gen 2 already scores well. The current Ford Super Duty has been the same since 1997. That's like 18 years! They just keep refreshing it (a new all-new Super Duty is coming soon though).
I think Toyota phoned it in with the styling, but I can warm up to it if the new motor is good continues to be reliable.

The frame of the cab is same as 2nd gen but reworked outer sheet metal and even then it looks similar

I work in auto glass and I looked up the dimensions of the door and quarter glasses. It is indeed different. The front door glass and quarter windows are a hair bigger (only have numbers for an access cab).

Thats because of the restyled/stamped sheet metal, just slightly different piece of glass. The outer door dimensions and the cab itself I'm willing to bet are the same and willing to bet the windshield is the same, just like the rear window.

Cab is supposed to be a bit wider, but due to door panels and layout. The double cab is supposed to add and inch or so. Overall length of double cab longbed is about 4 inches I want to say. I could be off on that one. But if the seats are wider due to panels the seats may not fit.

The added length was due to the safety impact law stuff and adding to the front and rear bumpers. The composite bed is carried over from 2nd gen, so dimensions should be same, the sheet metal may be a bit longer.

I hope they all carry over. That will make retooling easier and shipments quicker.

Looks like just slightly different front door skins and bedsides. I see nothing else different cab wise.

Yeah, it's same cab. The overall length, as already noted, is a tad longer due to bumper overhangs. Even things like the panels and storage bins behind that rear seats are identical. Sorry to the folks who thought it was all new, it isn't.

Though according to Mr.Swears nothing is the same besides maybe a seat belt bracket. Lol. But toyota certainly wouldnt try to deceive buyers into buying the "all new truck".

Every panel was at least touched, so that is how they can get away saying the body is "all new''. Very misleading what Mr. Swears said though.

So this skinning needed new glass?

I may be wrong, but I thought in one of the interviews better glass was mentioned as part of sound proofing (making the cab quieter)

Im sure like they said its new glass too but I bet like you said different sizes, Im guessing the actual door like the outside measurement is the same, the glass dosent go all the way to each edge in the door, same cab still, new sheet metal, new glass, new interior components, revised frame, etc. but still bones carried over.
