Just took my prerunner(non locker) out to pismo last weekend. Did decent. I didnt do any hardcore wheelin. Just some driving around in the sand and camping. I brought a shovel and wood just incase.
Aired down to 18psi rear and 22 front. I should have gine lower in the back. 14-15 would have been good. I did get semi stuck do to coming to a fast stop in some semi deep stuff. Wasnt hard to get out though, just shovel the sand out all 4 tires and ease the gas like crazy and we got rollin. Keep in mind this was on nitto terra grappler all terrains.

Umm... those tracks are only as good as they are long... The key is to DEFLATE the tires! That beach looks like a parking lot... flat and hard... I can easily see why 2WD is all you need there. In dry, soft, deep sand... you must make your tires look seriously low on air if you want to drive out or about... even with 4WD is some sand.
10-15 psi is typical on the beach sand I drive on (see photo).

When i went camping out there a few months back with my gf, we did the river crossing at high tide, the river was 200-300 yards long foot deep at the shallow. I usually go 10-15psi but since i was solo i went to 5psi. Got stuck once comming back to camp in some real soft sand on an incline. Some people tried to help but made it worse. GF buried the rear and i spent and hour digging out the truck. Made some wood ramps, but the tires wouldn't catch and just shredded the wood. this would have been helpful http://www.arbusa.com/Products/Tow-Straps-And-Recovery-Gear/Exhaust-Jacks/46.aspx

That's good ole Galveston right there. The beach can be pretty sandy, nothing like Pismo or the Sahara desert though, and I've found that airing down the tires helps immensely. Just my .02

    05sctaco, nice find.

Heres a vid of my PreRunner messing around. Took it out to a Off road park, it tackled every hill they had to offer pretty much. Even the sandy ones. With enough gas youd be surprised what a PreRunner can do, even a non locker.

WOO FOR HOUSTON! :D I know exactly where you are in those pics.

I have a 2wd. Works pretty alright for me. Put a lift and tires and I think you'll be set for most situations.

I have a 4x4 Taco for the snowy days around here. I avoid going into 4 cause she gets real stiff in turns. I just throw about 200lbs of sand bags on the axle and drive a little more conservative and do fine. Just upgraded from the crappy stock AT-20's and am looking forward to a little snow. But for the most part a 2wd would be fine for me. I just like the added comfort that 4 gives when you think you might get stuck.
