Ok So I know there are tons of threads on here about the conversion, but I have not been able to find one that has the info on WHAT I will need to do it. I have my reasons why I would like to do this and realized it would probably be cheaper in the long run to just do a conversion. I have a 2010 Tacoma PreRunner with TRD package with some stuff on it and currently has 24,000 miles on it.

Quick reason: I owe more money on this thing than it is worth and on top of that I hit someone a year ago so my vehicle has a claim against it which would drive value down even more. I would probably have to put down at least $5000 to get out of debt with this truck if I swapped it out for a 09 or newer 4x4 and I figured it should cost around $5000 to get swap done anyways.

Any help would be awesome, if anyone knows someone or anyone who has ACTUALLY done this your input would be appreciated as well.

The spindles I believe are the same and toyotas are all prewired for the options you can get no matter what trim level you have.

You will need a transmission from a 4wd and the transfer case, front and rear driveshafts, axles and other small things like the 4x4 switch etc. I haven't seen it done. I priced everything out a while back and with used parts and a manual tcase from a fj cruise I want to say you could do the swap for under $3000. If you can weld I would say put a dana 44 under there, it would probably be around the samee price.

It's really not worth the trouble, unless you have a lot if cash and time.

There are some variables to consider such as the cost of the 4WD ECU (electronics). The needed wiring harnesses will also need to be procured and installed. It's quite possible some electronics may need to be reflashed (programmed by dealer).

OP if you do compete the conversion on a 2nd gen you would be the first that I know of.

Or you could just SAS it. Might actually be cheaper. You'd still need the T-case though.

^This. I considered finding a wrecked 4x4 2nd gen to swap drivetrains, or SAS'ing, but I've decided to get a dedicated offroad vehicle and have a DD. Now I'm just waiting for the right deal to come along.

All very good ideas. Maybe it will be better to just enjoy the Pre Runner till I buy a house then get another older 1st gen taco and turn that into my rock crawling machine. Only thing stopping me from doing that now is I have no room to put it.......damn CALIFORNIA LIVING!!! NO SPACE!!!!
