most of it is covered in the build. I am going to get the part numbers to the speed sensor you will need if you get a 4Runner tranny, because they are the exact same tranny as the tacomas but the 4runner goes off the ABS where the tacomas have a speed sensor on the back of the tranny. but even the 4runner trannys still have the hole for the sensor, it is just plugged

As others have posted, it's been done. If you can't do it yourself and don't have buddies who can help you, sell it and buy a 4x4, I can't see it being cost effective.

Not a Toyota, but my uncle did it on a 91 F150. I don't think it would have been worth it if he wasn't a mechanic with 30 years of experience building engines, transmissions, hot rods, etc. The truck in question was also my grandfather's truck and only has around 35K miles on it after 20 years, otherwise I don't think he would have taken it on. He said it took one weekend to install the factory 4x4 front axle and suspension and the rear lift blocks (factory), and one weekend to disassemble the transmission, change the tailhousing and shaft, reassemble and bolt the transfercase in.

If you take the time and get the details right, it can look factory. If you didn't know that my uncle's F150 started out 2wd, you would not be able to tell. He even changed the badges on the grille. On the other hand, it does not have the "wow" factor to it like some mods do. No one is going to chase you down in parking lots and ask how the hell you did that.

Less to go wrong, just more simple, and you can pop in a auto-locker with manual hubs from what I've heard.
