Im about to take my 04 Prerunner in to the shop to get converted professionally. I wish I could be part of the transformation but I am college student in an apartment in which I can't work on my truck. The parts and the full install is going to cost me $2200, and that should a ton of new parts, and the labor. Plus I will have the warranty of the work being done! Hopefully I can post some before and after pics if you guys want.

That's a good price to have it converted. Now that my conversion is done I'm truly happy I did it.

Yea hopefully it all turns good. Ever since I've had it the way I do people always assume it's a 4x4 and their look when I tell them it's a prerunner is priceless. I believe it's time to unlock it's potential and go 4x4. As for the price I too believe it's a good deal, I have been looking around and people say they find everything between 1000-1500 so 2200 for someone else to do the searching and the work is fine with me, and not to mention if I sell some of the parts I get back.

What was your reason behind your conversion? What was your price? Manual lock or ADD?

Well the reason why I went 4x4 was because it was a project I always wanted to do and the timing just worked out. I lost my 2.7 and I decided to swap to a 3.4 and then I thought well if I'm going to do that much work I might as well get the 4x4 done too. It took me about 5 months from start to finish. The cost was about 4-5k that includes the Long Travel fab work and cv's I also did. I went with the ADD. If you check out my build you'll see everything that was done. To much to explain here. Good luck with your build

Nice! I wish I could be more involved in the conversion but because of school and my living situation I can't. The truck has sentimental value to it so I didn't even think about selling and buying a 4x4. I will be checking out your truck and if I have any questions I will be sure to contact you!

Hi, do I need special CVS if I want manual hubs on my 14 tacoma prerunner 4x4 conversion?

Edit, one question, what is ADD? What's the difference From manual? And if I go ADD what parts will I need? Thx everyone

Edit, I saw that they don't sell manual hubs for 2gen tacoma.. So what can I do so that the front drive shift stays free when on 2hi?

    Thx

So let me ask this, could I use a donor 1st gen taco 2.7L 4x4 on conversion for a 3rd gen 4runner with also a 2.7L? And from what read it shouldn't be to serious if I find a nice donor vehicle with the right specs. Sorry I know this is a taco/pre-runner thread, it just seems you all have more experience on a conversion then some of my 4runner brethren.

Some good information here thanks. I have an 01 Tacoma sr5 with Trd package (I believe this added the rear diff lock). This truck was willed to me and thus I have no plans on selling or trading it in. It's a great running truck with only 97k miles on it. It is only used for trips to the ranch and only thing I feel it is missing is 4wd. This is an auto truck with the 3.4 and I'd like to keep it that way. With that said is there a cut and dry parts list that includes everything needed to perform this swap in my garage? My plan is to gather all the parts this year and have it converted by spring of 18. Any help is mich appreciated. Thank you

Thank you. Since I'm going to stay auto the trans I need is a340f off a first gen taco or 4Runner correct? That is a good price for the trans. I can't find one locally for under 700. Thanks again

I think you need the 01-04 transmission due to the electronic stuff changing I believe. Not sure if it's the A340F but I did use the a340f in my 00.

Yeah the list were rough estimates and will obviously vary. Right, a340f is 4wd. E is 2wd. You will need a trans pre-03 because they are controlled via drive by cable.

Awesome thank you. I have some extra money now and since the trans is roughly the biggest expense I wanted to get that out of the way early. Regards

@wingedone - where are you located? I'm in Southern Utah (2 hrs from Vegas) and I'm converting my 2003 Tacoma V6 4wd from auto to manual trans and manual front hubs. I'll have the complete auto trans with j-shift t-case as well as the interior bits you'll need (in gray color) as well as front cv axles available soon. Just hit 100k miles on my truck. I'm all ready to go with my swap as I've got all the conversion parts...I'm just trying to work up some effort to get started... Haha

If you're close enough to me, I was figuring on about $500 or so for my trans/case combo... I'd def work someone a deal on a buncha stuff...

I'm in SA TX. Would you be willing to ship? Obviously I'd pay for shipping. May I ask why you are going to manuel? Do you have the 5VZ engine? I had doubts that I'd find something with around the same mileage as the trans in my truck now. Thanks.

    Oh hey same city.
You'd need a transmission from a year earlier and older as they are controlled differently. You could still make it work but would take more effort vs plug and play.

Most people prefer to have manual capability in these trucks, which is I'm sure his reason.
