Whoops. Forgot about that difference on the 03-04s vs the older ones... And I cant remember exactly what it takes to swap between them...

Def read up on it @wingedone and let me know.

Ok so let's say I decide to go with the manual trans it's the w59 98-2002? Thanks I'll do some more research. The mt would probably get me a few more miles out of a full tank. As it stands now, I'm getting a little under 300 miles out of a full tank.

There's a crap ton more work to do on going 5-speed manual during a prerunner-to-4wd conversion vs just going with the auto....with the auto you pretty much just pull out the 2wd auto and throw in the 4wd auto....(and the bolt on all the front axle stuff). With the 5-speed there is a big handful extra parts you gotta collect for the clutch...plus you gotta drill some new holes in the firewall for the clutch master. Anyway, ain't nothing somebody around here hasn't already done before, so plenty of threads and info out there on it... just know that its a lot more involved. :)

Having a hard time finding a decent A340F with transfer case. I was unable to post in the f/s section. Anyone have any leads? Thanks

You know... Technically you can use your same auto trans and just convert it... You can go two different ways about it: OEM stuff or something like the "lefty" case from inchworm (low-range off road now).

To go OEM route you need to get the output shaft from one of the 4wd trannies (the a340f), the proper tail-housing from the same, and a proper t-case. Should all be from a V6 if yours is V6. Some say the tcases are the same between v6 and 4cyl, but I dont know for sure there... The output shafts are for sure different though. So anyway, you just swap the shaft into your current trans, and bolt up the 4wd tail housing and t-case. Done.

If you go with something like the "lefty" I think there is one that just bolts right up to the prerunner auto trans output. (I *think* this option might require resizing of both the rear *and* front shaft lengths....)

As of just a few days ago the inchworm option is no more. I contacted them about placing an order and was told they were sold out with no definite plans to produce the adapters in the future. Sucks because I was planning on going this route to use my current auto transmission. Maybe I'll look into converting the shaft to a 4wd version.

Got a question for you guys that have done it. Being on a high school budget, money is something I've never seen before. So, to start the conversion process off, I want to do transmission first. My question is: Can I take a manual 4x4 Transmission and put it in the truck without the rest of the 4x4 components? Meaning can I block off the hole in the transfer case for the front driveshaft?

Yup I called them yesterday am and same thing. Just gotta keep looking. Yards around here don't seem to have the 4x4's.

Yep. Sort of. You would have to do the transfer case at the same time as the transmission though. And there wouldn't be any hole or anything to block off, you would just not hook anything up to the front output flange on the transfer case.

When I did the prerunner to 4wd conversion on my old Tacoma I did the trans and case at a completely different time than the front axle.

Bummer about the Inchworm stuff. Seems like the 1st Gen Tacoma isn't getting as much love these days at it used to. Makes sense a bit though...lotsa folks moved on to 2nd and 3rd gens now.

When I did mine, I swapped in a complete 4wd trans with case, but if I did it again, I would look into just swapping the shaft. (Or having someone do it)

BTW, @wingedone , are you also looking at 3rd Gen 4Runner transmissions? They're the same thing. I used a 4wd 4Runner one when I did the swap....

We're talking about the transfer case on the end of the 4x4 transmission right?
OH! I see now, the hub for the driveshaft is already on the transfer case

So, say I have the correct 5 speed transmission and Transfer Case. All I need now is:
    Shorter 4x4 Rear Driveshaft
    Pedal Assembly
    Clutch Linkage
    Clutch Fluid Resevoir
    Interior Trim Pieces
    Correct?

Pretty much. You're just looking to get that knocked out right?
I'm not entirely positive if the 2.7 assembly and 3.4 are the same or not, be sure they are though.

Well, there's a good handful more items to consider, but they could be "included" in your other items....

    -trans shifter
    -t-case shifter
    -shifter knobs for each
    -master cylinder
    -slave cylinder
    -all the clutch fluid lines
    -clutch fork
-correct manual flywheel (with good surface)
-clutch kit (clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, and alignment tool if you dont have one)
    -correct trans crossmember mount
    -bell housing

Took me months to convert mine to 4WD. Had to plan each weekends progress with an eye on driving the truck to work the following week.
