So, is this "drive by wire" on 03-04 misinformation?
I've searched, I've asked, I've looked at schematics till my head hurts.

    Drive by wire What?
    It's the same transmission. A340f.
It's the same "J" shift transfer case.
Mechanically, both units look pretty much the same as the previous years. So what's the issue?
Where can I find info on this "drive by wire" 03-04 vs 99-2002 trans/tcase setup.

the valvebody is different and lacks the kickdown cable for your engine, yes its the same trans, but you'll have to swap valve bodies.

Well that's atleast more info than I got previously with "it won't work", drive by wire blah, blah.
    It's not worth it.

for the slim chance you cant adapt it, id avoid it.

you "should" be able to swap bellhousings with a v6 trans to fit your 4 pot though. just find 02 or older (00 or older 4runner)

    Well, I found an 02 single cab with a 2.7, auto, 4x4.
It's by far NOT something I want to cut up just for parts. But it's cheap, (under $4k) and IT pretty much has everything I need except for a trans cross member and a rear driveshaft.

Front drive shaft will work, your rear will not from a reg cab

    True.
No worries. I just need to find something capable.
Either a dc rear shaft or something I can have cut and modified. More than enough driveshaft avail locally.

Sorry, meant front d's in the previous post.

    Easier?
    Pretty much my only choice.
3rz, 4wd, auto, dc is nearly on the extinct list.

Get the trans from an 99-02 V-6 4x4, swap bellhousings and torque converters and you are basically good-to-go... That is if you can't find the 3RZ in 4WD

Will a prerunner bellhousing work or do I need to find one from a 4x4 3rz?

Is swapping the valvebody difficult? I'm looking at a 04 3.4 DC to be the donor vehicle for a 4WD conversion on my pops 02 3.4 DC Prerunner.

Thanks! I started watching A340 teardown videos on youtube and it doesn't look too bad. I guess the worst-case scenario would be having to swap the A340F output shaft to the A340E.

Truck it's pretty stock no modifications currently
I'm currently in the same process.. I have a 02 prerunner single cab, short bed rust free and clean.. I had been wanting to do build a daily truck but also 4x4 since we get lot of snow up north.. after 2 years finally found a donor 00 Tacoma manual 4x4 frame it's beyond repair and only got it for 1100..
