Can anyone confirm what I am looking at here. I am pretty sure the vss assembly is what is circled in green. from the exploded view its hard to tell if the output flange has a gear to drive the vss or if that is just the spline for the output flange?

Its a vehicle speed sensor ( vss) .
There are no mechanical driven gears in your truck , the vss works off the teeth of the speedometer gear and sends a digital signal to your ecm computer . The signal is then converted from an alternating current signal to a 12 volt dc signal

 

Yeah maybe I called it the wrong thing when I said speedo. When I took the vss out of my 2wd trans there was a gear driven sensor which mated to another gear internally. when I took the cover off of the fj tcase there was no internal gear to drive the vss.

if all the tacoma 4x4s run the vss off the t case there should be a gear that I can replace the 'blank' spacer with and be able to drive the vss

I was able to the the URD tob in and put the 4x4 trans in to figure out where the relative position of the shifters is going to be. looks like ill need to chop and weld the cross member to move it forward ~2 inches to mate up to the new trans location.

The trans shifter location looks like it moved forward about 2 inches which ends up helping the overall setup because that will bring the tcase shifter forward as well, keeping everything relatively centered.

Thanks for digging that up I knew I saw that at one point but I couldn't find it again, Wyatt was able to help out with the kit.

 

over the weekend I cut the tunnel for the t case shifter and relocated the trans crossmember. I checked the initial stick placement and it is a little tight in 2hi and 5th/6th gear the tob kit should help but still needs to be cut and bent to put into a better spot not as close to the dash for 1/3/5th gears.
I was able to drive it briefly however noticed a decently sized leak coming from the interface between the tcase and the trans so I will need pull it again and swap out a seal. As far as I can tell when I swapped the input shaft the cover needed to be swapped for a 6speed trans which is different for the auto trans.

I also need to relocate the exhaust and I can contemplating doing an aftermarket y pipe but i'm not sure it will pass CA emissions?

 

I finally got around to pulling the tcase back out and swapping some parts around:

The cover for the input shaft was incorrect which is why I had such a bad leak coming from the interface between the trans and the tacse. I had previously drained all the out out of the tcase but when I pulled it off another 2-3 cups of oil came out.. I also got the correct speed sensor and gears from RST and put those in.

All that is left:
cut/reweld trans crossmember and drop it 0.75"
Install tcase
extend speed sensor wires
reroute exhaust up behind tcase
cut/relocate snifters to their final location

 

What housing did you end up using on the tcase to stop the oil leak

 

I used the tacoma 6spd cover

 

Ok . Yea mines leaking to but I have the auto trans

 

Does the oem rear driveshaft out of an 4x4 work or is it custom? Front is oem also? intend on starting mine soon.
