I worked a fatal wreck some years back and a few days later we were called to the garage to help a Trooper with his investigation. We had to use our cutters & spreaders (Jaws of life) to dismantle a big section of the car under and to the side of the passenger seat to get to a black box. I had never knew of a box that well hidden and hard to access until then. This was an older sports car and the Trooper hooked it up to his computer and gathered all kinds of info, he knew how much gas was being given at the time of the crash and the guy didn’t apply any brakes before impact. I wonder where our black boxes are hid in our Tacos?

I can understand the concern, we all should be more aware of how our DATA is used. That being said, if the LE wants the information they are going to get it.

There isn't a black box specifically for recording, it's the SRS central airbag module, it just so happens to record very specific data, that can only be retrieved by investigation services.

boom, found a crash data retrieval tool that any joe off the street can buy. No special certification or whatever needed. Just credit card or paypal 7k and it's yours. This is only for the obd port so if you want direct to module connectors that's another couple grand http://www.crashdatagroup.com/bosch-cdr-pro-tool-kit/

That tool will only read the data just FYI

You'll also need to know how to read the data and interpret it

A lot of the time, they're just running your plate to confirm you're riding a legal vehicle and have a MC drivers cert. I doubt they're "waiting" for you to break the law. Honestly, they just don't have to work that hard to pull people over. Idiots tend to find them.

Sooooooooo... you know me well enough, based on that question to know that I'm irresponsible and am not a normal human being? I think that might be one of those things... you know, they make an ASS out of... ;)

Since you couldn't trouble yourself to actually read my post, please refer to the below-quoted pertinent extract:

I am WELL aware that should the Crown feel the necessity, they can obtain the information, that said, there is a codicil in Canadian law, which may or may not exist in US, called "implied consent". Simply stated, this means that if you are unable or incapable by reason of injury, illness or absence to withhold it, your consent is deemed to be given in cases where it is assessed as being for your own, or the greater good. In other words, if there's nothing to say, "Don't download my data" and you're not there, because you're unconscious as a result of an accident, they can simply help themselves. This is most commonly applied in first aid scenarios; an unconscious person is deemed to have given implied consent to be provided medical aid, however it can be used to other circumstances.

I'm a private person by nature, and if someone's going to be taking my property whether real, or virtual, I want to be aware of it.

I'd like an obd2 port cover to keep the dealer out. I hate it when they flash shit without permission.

Damn...I reckon I was nuts for putting a Progressive Snapshot in my Nissan and Jeep for 6 months.

My agent did tell me the main thing they look for is aggressive take offs and hard stops. At the end I had a total of 6 hard stops, asked my agent if that was bad. He said they have seen people with 10 a day.

I saved a bunch on my insurance.

I have a 2018 so it has the camera up on the windshield. I wonder if it is loop recording video. I suspect it is and I wonder how many seconds or minutes it is recording? I might have a built in dash cam without knowing it. Have you ever had any experience with these built in Lane Assist/Accident Avoidance cameras? Do you know if they are they recording? Toyota literature hints that they are recording.

Look back through the paperwork when you bought your truck. You did sign a piece of paper that specifically said yes they "can download your data". Toyota is has provided the NHTSB with the updated software for pre and post collision recording. This is nothing new and had been standard for 10 years.

This a PDF with some info on EDR in US. It was going to be made mandatory in 2014 but 99% of new cars already were coming with them installed so no need for regulation. There is a bit on privacy and need for warrants for anyone other than Toyota, in an official data collection capacity, that want the info. A tech just dowbmoading your shit will wind up in court if you push it. After you leave the dealership, take it to a other one and get the last data transfer date.

Seems like a lot of concern about something that has no real impact on you, let alone there is really anything to do about it.

That box is there for a reason, and the potential benefits far outweigh the concerns.
