[Preventing] access to the Event Data Recorder?

Plus witnesses, and if someone around at the time has a dash cam in their vehicle, they can show the police the video. The data is nothing to be worried about.

Why not just put a tag with some sort of legalese saying "the owner of this vehicle does not give consent to access the EDR" on the plug? Kind of like a tattoo that says DNR?

It's going to be located very close the center of gravity of the vehicle, usually where the dash and center console meet and it's bolted down. It's not very easy to get at. For law enforcement purposes a search warrant, or owners consent, is needed to access the information on it....at least here in the states.

Doesn't matter where you live, in the US, a search warrant or owners consent would be needed for law enforcement to access it.

I understand, the big words are tough... again: here's the key point in my question:

I understand that if there is a Court order, I have to provide that access, HOWEVER... since the data is my property, I don't think exercising control over it is unreasonable. Your opinion may differ (and yes, I'm aware of the difference between the licensed software and the data it produces).

 

If your truck had insurance you did. I guess if you paid cash maybe not.

 

Always pay cash, and rules are slightly different regarding stuff like that here. That said, there were a number of things that were stroked out and initialed in the sales agreement & other paperwork...

Op, why the worry? That information has as much of a chance of exonerating you as it does hurting you, probably more in your favor than not. Are you just worried about someone spying on you?

Folks just remember.....your vehicles are mobile computers now. Your infotainment systems all collect and store data, and that's in addition to the data collected about the operation of the vehicle. Meaning, your GPS, the information from the phones you connect to or sync up to it, all of the text messages you send and receive through etc. etc. It can all be collected and analyzed.

I have to laugh every time I read posts like this. People are so worried that big brother is watching and listening to everything that they do. 99.99% they could care less about you and what you are doing unless you are involved in some sort of criminal activity. People freely, and very willingly, give out a VAST amount of information about themselves through all of their social media on a daily basis. More than enough for anyone who feels like it to put together a very accurate profile of you and your daily activity and movements....but you're worried about the ECM, ACM or PCM on a vehicle? Seems a little silly to me.

 

I wonder if the pedestrian alert sensors/brake assist will stop you before hitting bigfoot!

But why the fear?
You do realize that it's just logging engine data etc

And the other stuff it's logging would just as easily be obtained by the head unit navigation system. Or the diagnostic software as it would be logged in there as well.


Should you bring it to the dealer for service almost positive the work order you sign before giving the key would even have some fine print on it that they are allowed access to said data should they need it.

Lock your vehicle and those that you don't want given permission to said data won't have it. Don't give the key to anyone you don't want getting access to it.
Once you bring it in for service though that information would be needed for diagnostics should there be a problem.

I highly highly doubt you are of any importance or what have you that anyone without legal authority to access it through a warrant or what have you would have the slightest care to access it, or the software to access it in the first place.
