Ya, I guess they just give those keys to everyone for no matter what model it is. Just thought it was funny. Key is just another spare to me.

As near as I can tell from browsing the Toyota website, the "Engine immobilizer" system comes with the 4.0 engine but not the 2.7 engine.

I don't have access to my owners manual right at the moment, so I take it these keys are NOT programmable by the owner?

I know in the past I was able to find chipped key blanks farily cheap on Ebay (for a Mitsubishi Galant). Took them to the hardware store to be cut for a couple dollars, then the programming procedure, I believe was explained in the owners manual.

Bought my truck and it only came with one key, yikes!! Local dealer wants $69 for a chipped key and another $65 to program it, WTF . Another reason you guys call em stealerships I guess. I might search ebay and get 2 , but will still have to get stealership to program them.

Not true, it's actually a little RFID chip that is a short range radio. So what he said is true, just needs to be close and you could use an unchipped key then. If the door is open and the little key is flashing, the chipped key is not close enough. Not sure what year(s) the flashing key is on though. It is on my 09.

Negative, my gf snapped her key with the chip built into it in her scion tc and she got by just by holding the receiver close to the ignition when starting the car.
