Problem doing the diff breather mod

    I tried doing the diff breather relocation mod today, and I think I may have installed the union fitting wrong. No matter how much turned my wrench it was just not tightening. I then could not get the new union fitting out.

    I figured I was now at the point of no return, so I just finished up the mod. The new union fitting is on the diff but I can turn it freely, and I can move it side to side just a little.

    Just wanted to know if this is normal. If not how can I remove the union fitting? If water is able to get in then it would defeat the purpose of doing this.

    Well now I'm stuck. I decided to re-install the old diff breather back, but the new union fitting refuses to come out, it is now loser than before.

    Any ideas how to remove it? Is it safe to drive with it on?

    Either pry it out by force and tap new threads or jb weld in place. That's what id do.

    X2. Pull up on the union while loosening with vise grips should work.

    Just tried using vise grips. No matter how hard I pulled while turning it, it just did not want to come out. I am beginning to think the wrong part number was listed in this tutorial. Should I notify a mod to fix it?

    PM piercedtiger. Not sure if he actually did the mod on his truck. The part apparently works on other Toyotas like the 4Runner.

    X2 on the JB Weld.

    I was finally able to get it out by pulling on it with a vise grip and swinging it back and forth. Now either before or by doing this the threads are gone. The old breather will not go in.

    If I tap in new threads can the metal shavings cause damage to the rear diff? Right now I just want to get the old one back in so that I can get a new union fitting and get it welded on by someone.

    If you're gonna get the new one welded then just tap it back in and weld it up.

    I don't suspect the tiny amount of shavings will damage anything in the diff but chances are likely you will get shavings in the diff running a tap through there. Might minimize it by packing the hole with some grease. Still... hard to say.

    I'd rather just sand down the threads on the old one, and tap it into the housing then either JB Weld it or have someone weld it but I think if it were me (and I could weld it) I'd just JB Weld it.
