My wife's 2015 Sequoia only came with one fob, and I thought it would be nice to get her something that's a little bit better than just a replacement for the stock one. Would it be possible to use a different key/fob from another Toyota? A newer one I was thinking, from an Avalon or something.

I know how to do the programming itself, just not sure if it would work with something other than the same style key/fob it's supposed to use.

As far as I know it needs to be two from the same vehicle.

I am sure it can be done but have nothing that new to play with.

A good locksmith could give you some options. There are also various websites that sell aftermarket ones. The FCC ID needs to match for the transmitter and some keys have an "H" or other letter stamped in the key which deals with the transponder chip that's used to start the vehicle. So these two items need to match at a minimum.

i purchased 2 OEM fobs and key blanks for my Tacoma, got an OBDII to USB unit, came with Toyota techstream software for my Windows laptop, took about 5min to program both fobs and keys. Puente Hills Toyota wanted $15 to cut each key and $150 to program them. I went to Norwalk Toyota, they cut the keys for free. Easy peasy.
