I like my 959 and barefoot I can talk trash quite a distance. I also really like both of my Cobra 148gtl radios. One is 1983 Tiawan and 1990 Philipines unit. Just saving my pennies for both of these to get sent to Tim to work his magic on @ snake river customs.

I use a wilson 1000 antenna along with a 175 watt amp that is old as dirt but still works great. I have used firesticks and couldn't get a decent swr out of either of the two I had. This is after I bonded everything together as discussed here http://www.k0bg.com/ground.html . Since going to the wilson 1000 swr is less than 1.1 on channels 1 & 40 and it doesn't move on channel 20 at all. Dead key at two watts for the amp but barefoot am about 10watts and SSB 22watts with gain maxed out.

with the amp on whats the swing? just curious. and what magic you talking about? adding toys? tip swap? splits? that stuff is easy

just fyi from an ole skool han, if you have a really old linear with the flat biscuit transistors like the moto 454's etc, you can stack them to get 2x or 3x power, BUT make sure the linear power circuit can handle it or just use an oldone you dont care about because it WILL burn it up if the power circuit is weak! i stacked 2 sets of 454's in a an old pride 100 got easily over 500watts out of it ... for about a week, lol then it basically melted and burned lol!

but seriously to the OP, get a galaxy bro! 25watts out the box, thousands of chans, top quality! for those not familiar, typical uniden or cobra is about 5watts max i believe, it been a while since i messed with them, but around there.

    cheers,
    disco

I personally would avoid anything made by Firestik like the plague. OP, someone already mentioned the Wilson 1000. Awesome antenna, it will blow that Firestik out of the water. It is also easier to set up and tune and there will be no extra parts to buy. The whip also unscrews from the mount if you need clearance.

Hmm now I'm a little worried about getting the relentless mount. Anyone running it without any issues. I'm reluctant to purchasing the firestik firering because I've read some iffy reviews. Can anyone recommend another mount that I can use the quick disconnect with? Looking to make the purchase today.
    Thanks guys.

Edit: I haven't picked where I am going to mount it in the cabin, I figure I get all the gear and then I can try out some different locations. Definitely going to look into grabbing a 90 degree connector though. Thanks for the tip.

The radio wasn't benched with the amp. I'm not an electrical guy this is why I send my stuff to Tim.
