Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Do you have any spacers on the wheels or is that just stock

 

Not an Off Road but an SR5. This was pre lift. All stock other than the 255/85r16

 

This is stock but these of the fake pro wheels, so I think the offset is 13mm in stead 25ish mm that the off road wheels are.

 

Just got back from Moab which is a 4+ hour drive so I finally got some good highway miles on em. To me, they seem to perform much better going 75-85 than 55-65
If I’m not mistaken the foot print is actually bigger than stock, just a different shape (oval instead of more squarish) I think the squirrely/roaming feeling is more or less natural. From my experience, the taller tire you go with the more they tend to feel a bit tippier. Not sure if there’s a way around that? I did feel much more confident after I broke them in and got used to driving on them. FWIW

Didn’t air down (don’t have a system yet) so the ride was a bit bumpy, which is probably why the wife was being way too dramatic
But the tires still preformed great! Sorry bout the lousy pics, first time doing some serious wheeling with the new 50000$ truck and was a bit nervous. Dragged the hitch a few times and scraped up the mud flaps a bit. There were a ton of gnarly ledges and drops and rock faces we climbed and descended. Truck and tires didn’t blink an eye

Correct Tire pressure helps, which I’ve found (and used an online calculator to keep the same load rating as stock) to be around 35-40 psi. But the real problem with our trucks handling is the overly soft rear suspension, both springs and damping. Maybe just the springs on the Pro? There’s not enough spring rate in back to control suspension movement on big bumps (frost heaves, washboarding and rutted dirt roads, big expansion joints, pot holes, etc) and not enough damping to control and settle the big jolts to the spring and axle. Instead of soaking up the bumps and hits, the back end just shudders and slams through its travel. I had similar issues on my dirt bike not wanting to hook up on washboarded roads and bouncy trails in particular, and it needed more spring and the shock revalved to fix it.

I drove in stock suspension and stock sizes tires for 54k miles, and just on 255’s for about 3k miles, and now with 5100’s and a single AAL for all of 50 miles but the ride is so much better with the new suspension. It was really noticeable how bad and soft the rear was when I took my truck for a quick halfway-done test drive during my 5100 install: I did the fronts first and it was a revelation. The front end did great on big road bumps while the back end flailed and shuddered and wouldn’t hook up (I live on a dirt road that’s pretty rough right now).

So yeah, my advice is if you want a better ride, upgrade the rear suspension somehow. If you want a lift, get an AAL and match it with the front. If you don’t want to lift, get sumo springs or airbags. Shocks too, except for the pro’s I guess as I assume their fox suspension is superior to the basic aftermarket upgrades like the 5100’s as well as the other factory suspensions. For a Pro I’d lean towards just an AAL and Eibach lift springs up front.

 

The eibach is always out of stock it's so good, the thread on here is very good for the info, I have been following it for awhile and I should have gotten the kit when I could have gotten 30% off all orders through headstrong (I think)when it was some holiday last year. I hesitated and I missed it. Could have gotten kit and new rims dirt cheap, now there are no sales ever on the kits.

 

This is interesting. I currently have a Fox suspension kit on mine but I haven't had a chance to install the AAL to the rear. I'm hoping to do this the weekend of the 4th so hopefully it will help a little.

 

Just put 255/85 cooper st maxx on 2018 quicksand trd off road short bed (the stock were close to done at 28k). All stock but have ovtune 2.0 beta. Tire kingdom initially said on the phone they may not clear ucas (it is close) but had no trouble and were able to fit the spare as well (it was a very tight squeeze). Paid $1660 for 5 tires + balance + alignment + taxes/shop fees. Love them so far and don't regret the extra $$$ over 265/75 which I debated as well. I personally have not noticed much if any power loss but I live in Florida so no hills (ovtune helped a lot even with the stock tires)...

 

How are you guys fitting the spare? Mine doesn't even come close to fitting.

 

What wheels are these? I've seen the fj steelies but they're 17's. Where you find 16's? I love it! Awesome truck

 

Stock OR spare is a steel 16".

 

How embarrassing, I've had my truck over a week now and haven't peeked at the spare. Now who wants to sell me their spares? Come on folks, cough em up.

 

I've had my truck for 3.5 years and have only checked my spare once so I'd say you're doing ok.

 

You can bend the horns out a little. Just be mindful of your exhaust and other hangydowns

But you can find them on dealer websites. Don't worry about warnings saying it's for spare use only.

You can buy 2nd gen Tacoma spares, I think that's what these were listed under.

 

That's the downside to the spare steels. Most have high BS and high (positive) offset, pulls the wheel/tire inside more.

Well unfortunately my experiment with the 255/85's didn't last long.

Looking like i'm only going to get approximately 35k out of my BFG KM3's.

I got 90k out of my 265/70 Duratracs. They would've lasted longer if my alignment held straight.

Both sets were E rated.

Same tire pressures.

Same truck weight/driving conditions.

 

I have a 16” steel spare sitting on my garage floor that I haven’t decided what to do with. I considered buying 4 more steel spares to mount my M/Ts on, but I was concerned about quality since it’s a spare. I went with 5 OR rims for my 255/85r16 M/Ts and 5 trd pro rims for my 265/70R16 A/Ts.

 

Which ones did you get?

The coopers will fit even without bending the ears, but it’s a little better fit bending them.

The coopers are not as tall as the bfg or any of the other ones.
