Considering the Grom unit. The Grom website claims some headunits will support up to 99 virtual discs. They also note that other headunits may only support 6 virtual discs. However, they offer no specifics about model years/brands/etc.

For those playing music through a USB stick/HDD, does the OEM radio support more than 6 virtual discs?

Found FAQ at their site, modern Toyotas do support up to 99 virtual CDs (Grom Audio calls them playlists for some reason). Each virtual CD is limited to 2000 songs without messing up random & repeat functions. Interesting (to me) is that the unit will remember settings for up to 4 USB sticks as long as there is 20 virtual CDs or less per stick.

Posted for anyone else wondering and searching.
