I say have new cables made the length you need .

I have been making them for years

A splice just adds another connection to cause problems since most people forget it is there .

And a splice is just another point of possible high resistance. Make the cable a home run like electictions do.

You can get quality wire and lugs at most welding supply houses FWIW. If you decide to splice, be sure and use heat shrink on the splice.

This is persuading me to start putting together a dual battery system instead of fooling around with this...

I think hes probably referring to taking the factory loom apart in order to get the factory cables out and then the new ones in. Yes its not complicated from an electrical point, but to do it right and have it look good like he said in the OP can take a lot of time. Especially if you're laying on the ground trying to get to everything rather than on a lift in a shop..

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

What is causing you to have to add 5" to your cable?

A dual battery setup is a good option if you are going to run a lot of accessories. But a dual battery setup is going to be A LOT more involved than just adding 5 inches to your battery cable.

Ha, yes I know. I replaced my oe battery with a group 27M. The cables reach, but it’s messy to say the least.

I’ve been wanting to add a second battery anyway so come family and I do get a ways out there. My accessories are minimal and I do t plan to add much, but want the assurance that a second battery offers. Currently just operating a fridge and ham and cb radios, but will be adding a little lighting and winch at some point, so now I’m thinking I’ll just go for it.

Don’t buy a crimping tool. Solder everything correctly and heat shrink wrap the terminal ends.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

With what you're running, a second battery wouldn't be a bad idea.

I can't disagree more with this.

A quality crimping tool is a must doing a dual battery set up. Especially for someone who is not familiar with proper soldering.

Crimped terminals and connections with quality crimpers and good marine grade (with glue) heat shrink is more than adequate to make good, solid, reliable connections.

No one said that it wasn’t adequate.

Crimping is a pain in the ass and significantly more work. Not only that but a soldered cable is simply stronger than a crimped one.

It’s not hard to do either. Torch and rosin core solder, heat, melt, dunk, done.

To each his own I guess. I think soldering is a pain in the ass and unreliable.

Weird thread. Advice is give and discounted numerous times and then the OP wants to go a totally different direction that is three times hard than what he wanted to originally do.

Reminds me of people I have tried to help by trying to make them do the job but then you wind up getting suckered into doing it for them for which is probably their original intention.

    +1

Solder will also crack and split in time. Proper crimps are more reliable.

In certain applications, I crimp then get solder in there for best of both worlds.

OMG...never use solder on battery cables.
Get the *correct * size crimps and you're good.
If you want to go anal (like me) you can use OFC cables.

I will be glad to send you a piece of 2/0 welding cable with the lug please show me how you solder that on.

I give you smaller wire under 8 AWG can be soldered anything above is crimped
