Is the OEM block heater supposed to make a hissing noise? On every other vehicle i've had with a block heater they all made the hissing noise when plugged in, the block heater on my Taco doesnt. It's been plugged in for an hour or so, there is definitley power running to the cord so thats obviously not an issue. Any help/info is much appreciated.

I believe the hissing noise from most block heaters comes from being in direct contact with coolant that the heating element is exposed to. The Toyota one plugs into a hole in the block, so the element is in direct contact with the engine block, not the coolant. Therefore, the heat is conducted out in the metal more instead.

-12 feels like -20, not too cold but cold enough i'd like to use the block heater. People were golfing up until about 3 weeks ago here in Halifax. Are you yourself from NS? Where?

Oh, I went outside about an hour ago and I could hear some noise from the wheel well so I assume its working now lol.

If the block is cold, sometimes you'll hear a little creak that sounds like metal heating up when you first plug it in, but mine does NOT hiss, for sure.
