They will have some ATF in them. More so on the ones coming out of the radiator as the ATF in the cooler will drain out. I will guesstimate about half a quart total. Try and capture every bit that comes out.

How many miles? Those hoses last surprisingly long. I am coming up to 200K and mine still gook good. I intend on replacing them when I replace the major cooling parts as preventive maintenance at about 225K - radiator, water pump, fan clutch, etc …. Looks like thats what you are doing. May be a good time to also do an ATF flush.

    Welcome to TW.

Yes. If you want to replace those hoses, guesstimate how much ATF spills out. Add that amount plus half a quart back in. Then follow the temp check procedure in this post to properly check the ATF level when all done. Honestly it might be worth dropping the pan and doing a full refill while youre there.

Tip: Its worth trying to get the truck into temp check mode a few times before hand, thats the hardest part. The timing of everything has to be just right or else it wont work. You can also use a OBDII reader is you have one and have the transmission pan temp programmed in.

A separate thread with lots of good info on doing a pan cleaning:

hey chuy its only got 140000 on the odometer. i really dont wanna mess with any transmission atf quite yet i think its too soon.

sr-71 thank you sir for the advice and links on how to clean that transmisson pan. that seems like something i will have to research and study before i attempt.

Toyota recommends an ATF flush for special operating conditions (towing, off-roading, etc…) every 60K, and many of us follow it as as regular maintenance, or a drain/refill every 30-40K. In your case, if this were my truck I just purchased, I would replace the ATF filter and complete a drain/refill with WS ATF. Many of us switch to Valvoline Maxlife but follow our resident ATF guru’s advice of switching over only during a flush. He don't recommend mixing ATF brands.

Chuy thank you I stand corrected. this is above my skill level and i dont have an obdii or a clean place to do the work. im worried about messing things up. ill probably take it to a tranny specialist for that procedure.

totally new to toyota. was my dads truck and he willed it to me when he died.

Sorry to hear about your dad. If you were provided any vehicle records, take a look to see if he ever serviced, or had serviced, the transmission.
Yeah, the ATF service can be a very intimidating experience for many Toyota/Lexus owners, and those of other manufacturers getting rid of the ATF dip stick. Essentially, you check the ATF level by removing the check drain valve on the ATF pan when the ATF reaches a specified temp. The thread noted above is good and there are several youtube videos that can help out. Also, if you reside within an active TW group in the regional threads, you may find some local TW members willing to help you out in person.

Chuy this truck has never been off the pavement and has only towed about 1800 miles ever. She goes to the grocery store and back and thats about it. How do i find a local TW group in central pennsylvania?

PA would fall into the North East section. Keep an eye out here.

I would recommend you read through the procedures in the two threads I linked above. They are pretty in depth. That should give you an idea if this is something you want to tackle or not. No big deal if not, plenty of folks go without servicing, but the people around here tend to be a bit more.. attentive to their trucks.

At any rate, if the hoses are replaced someone will have to check the ATF level following the correct procedure.

I really do appreciate all the information and advice you guys gave me. I guess the main point of my question was just to see if I should avoid accidentally creating a bigger job for myself by letting out atf fluid. i will definitely have the work done at some point. Dad was an A & P airplane mechanic and automatic transmission mechanic for caterpillar d9 yellow equipment in his early life and his school of thought was drive it until it fails then rebuild, dont do unnecessary work, dont do a job unless you have a place to do and the know how, if you dont know dont go. He definitely did not have the atf flushed or pan dropped and filter changed magnets cleaned etc. Right now i have my hands full just getting hoses sourced for the coolant system and replacing things that look like they need replaced, like tensioner, alternator, water pump hoses etc. atf fluid its on my to do or have done list for sure now. once i get the truck all put back together im probably going to do the drive shaft universal joint and middle bearing replace.

sr-71a thanks again for the links i will check out the pa group
