Hi, first post but long time lurker. I have a deposit on a TRD offroad dclb that is slated to be in around July 7th. I requested super white not knowing about its sordid past. So for the last few days I have been pouring over posts here and other forums about the peeling issue with that paint and what Toyota was supposedly going to do. It seems like it is hit or miss on getting a repair on the bad spots. I have had my share of fighting with dealers (toyota, ford mazda) who don't want to stand behind what they sell especially for something like paint that happens a few years after the sale and where they most often say a rock caused it.

I had a '89 Toyota 4x4 with engine issues that I had to go to battle with Toyota on and that was not much fun either so....

I am hoping to get realistic opinions on this from those with super white trucks. Is this something to worry about? I originally wanted cement because it is a sweet color but now every other car on the road is that shade of color, honda, ford, jeep...and a ka zillion tacoma and Tundras. I still love cement so would be no issue for me to dump the white idea and go cement, maybe I could get one sooner too who knows.

what do you all think? much to do about nothing or would you buy a white truck knowing the past of that color?

Thanks for any thoughts I appreciate it.

Haven’t heard any recent issues with the newer trucks with white . I have had my truck over a year now . So far so good . I do wash and wax it on a regular basis. And I live in Arizona sun beats the shit out of vehicles here .

Researching online, it looks like starting in September of 2019 Toyota started publicly rolling out super-white paint recalls.

    https://tiremeetsroad.com/2019/09/2...izzard-pearl-super-white-paint-jobs-for-free/

I would guess that they had to have internally recognized the issue much earlier, probably at least a year or two. So if they have known they were going to end up doing paint recalls since say the 2017 - 2018 time frame, I would say it is reasonable to think that the 2020 - 2021 super-white vehicles should have updated paint. In the end who knows though. For what it’s worth I have a 2021 super white so I’m in the same boat.

I live in WA state and it will be parked outside 24/7 in the wet weather here, definitely not like you have in AZ. My cars literally grow mold in the window channels. I am not that great with the regular washing and waxing, would definitely go all winter with nothing done to it since it is either raining or too cold to deal with it. Wish I lived in AZ! MOst of what I have read on the white agrees with what you wrote... with regular maintenance it should be okay....the thing I most likely wouldn't be doing. :(

That makes a lot of sense, I would hope they would fix the issue and not just keep repainting their cars. Its weird too that there is no clear coat on the white but I suppose that may be true for other makers too when it is a non metallic color.

I have a 1995 xtra cab 4x4 I bought new that now has 303,000 miles on it. that ugly weird green. I had a bout with an icy road that wrecked most of the bed and right fender, it was repainted by the dealer. to this day the only place the clear is flaking and the paint is crap is the dealer re-spray. the other panels look great for the age and lack of regular care. I am just hoping if I get white it lasts as long as my '94 as this tacoma is hopefully going to be a 20 year truck again....if there is gas available that long.

You should see what that blazing blue pearl looks like after a couple of years in the tropical sun.

Modern car coatings suck balls. Water Based supposedly environmentally friendly.

How bad do you want the truck and are you willing to wait for another? Toyota's super white paint is a single stage paint and as you know Toyota is aware of the adhesion (or lack there of) issues. FYI, not all single stage paints are inferior.

Personally, I pass on it due to the fact that Toyota Corporate has agreed to re-paint some while refusing to repaint others on a case by case basis. I wouldn't want to be in that predicament or be waiting around for the paint to fail to request a fix, but I can understand how you have been waiting for this truck and looking forward to it. Are you willing to put up with a known potential defect and the possibility of Toyota refusing to fix it? Would you be willing to wait a little longer to find another truck?

I am leaning towards what you mention. I am not desperate to get one though definitely looking forward to it! I have zero tolerance or interest in dealing with a dealer or Toyota on a most likely no-win situation for a well known issue so I think I will just call my sales person and tell them the change of plan and look for a cement off-road base instead. Around here cement is definitely the more popular color so maybe they will be allocated one of those faster then white.

    appreciate everyone's thoughts!

I have a white one and my paint failed. I wouldn't buy a truck right now period (prices are stupid high with all the covid BS) but I especially wouldn't buy white.

Peeling white paint is not new to Toyota. Up to this point it had not been a huge issue with Tacoma’s. Hard to say if it really is as sure you will find people taking to forums to post photos but what is the total number actually experiencing peel out of total number of white vehicles, who knows. For example my GX is blizzard pearl which is a paint that has peeling issues across Toyota models, yet my particular vehicle is pristine. So some of it is environmental, some of it is taking care of the paint, and the rest is luck.

All that really says is Toyota has had this “primer issue” with poor top coat adhesion dating at least 15 years back. Don’t expect the white vehicles from here on out to be fixed. I’d opt for a different color. The darker colors need to be taken care of for sure to preserve the paint/clear coat too, especially in hot and sunny states.

My wife and I have had three second gen Super White Tacoma's (2005, 2011, 2015) and one third gen (2018). All except the 2018 have had over 100,000 miles on them before a trade. No problems with the Super White paint. All have been well cared for and waxed frequently.

You call corporate or actually go into the dealer?
When I called they told me off. When I went to the dealer they submitted it under the ZKG program and toyota approved it no problem.
