Has anyone installed a Cold air intake in CA and just reinstalled the stock air box just to pass smog? I’m wondering if it’s even worth it.

Go with a TRD intake system...smog techs will think that its stock.

I've never bothered reinstalling my stock air box in all the years of my truck ownership in CA. Never been dinged.

There were two generations of a CAI marketed by TRD.

The 1st gen was designed by aFe (i think) and it replaced the stock air box with an aftermarket one that utilized a conical type air filter. This model is now discontinued but used ones pop up for sale now and then.

The 2nd generation TRD CAI was designed by AEM (i think) and it replaced the stockk air box with an aftermarket one that utilized a flat panel-type KN filter. I believe this model is still readily available.

Any HP improvement/MPG change/engine behavior for either TRD CAIs........ that's strictly up for debate.

if you're the original owner of your 2015, you won't need smog until after 6 years from the original purchase.

Your stock intake is already a CAI. The TRD intake is 50 state legal. I'm not a fan of intakes that suck hot air from the engine bay. I really enjoy my TRD intake.

The newer trd intake (for 2nd gen tacomas) runs lean. Aem/k&n screwed up the tube diameter. Toyota was stupid and signed off on it.

    Your truck, your call.
