Detailing tape goes a long way on preventing that issue.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasors are great for some types of scuffs. I just removed shoe scuffs from the painted base boards all around my house. Also some on the linoleum. Always test in an inconspicuous spot.

They’re an odd material. Kind of like poly-vinyl foam but it sort of melts down when you scrub with it. Simple to use- wet with water, wring it out, and scrub.

I thought “how good could this be for $.99”. Then I tried it out and was pleasantly surprised. They just plain work and work well.

    Here's a comprehensive list of WD-40 uses:

    https://wd40.com/img/WD-40_2000_uses.pdf

Some of the uses come close to what I've posted here.

Example: removes scuffs from rubber bumpers.

No specific mention on scuff removal on plastic bumpers or plastic interiors. Vinyl is mentioned but it is my understanding that vinyl and hard plastic are not the same in terms of chemical composition. Could be wrong about that though.

I'm pretty confident at this point that WD-40 is safe to use on hard plastic parts on cars. It's really about applying a petroleum based product onto another petroleum based object.

It works great. Cuts right through the residue without harsh cleansers or scrubbing hard. I keep trying to find stuff to clean.

You guys are more "caution to the wind" types more than me with my precious truck.

I'll take a pass on all that. I don't need to find out down the road my interior and black trim are stained or flaking because I was too cheap to just get a trim dressing (or use automotive tape before sealing/waxing).

What is being advocating is surface spot treatment in a "wipe on/wipe off" application manner. I hope no one would directly slather it on and not wiping it off.

There are plenty of trim dressings that turn out to be terrible for plastics. The first one that comes to mind are some of the Armour-All products that have turned out to be bad on plastics over time, possibly due to the silicone base component of the product.

As for masking off a car before waxing, I'm not painting a house.

I think there is somewhat of a risk using any product on a car because no one is doing 10 year longitudinal studies on their products before they hit the market.

Just because something is cheap doesn't mean automatically it couldn't or shouldn't possibly be effective for some application.

After testing out this WD-40 on trim, I feel confident it is a safer and easier alternative than the Mr Clean Magic Eraser method.

Scuff mark removal is a real world issue for those of us that want to maintain a basic level of decorum in our trucks. If there are products out there that actually work, then by all means post it and share with the group. You can spend a fortune buying random "mouse-milk" products that claim whatever you want to hear.

The worst thing is to buy expensive products that either don't work or ruin plastics over time.

I use to use it like you are doing on the black plastic to remove wax on a 2003 Dodge Dakota. I never tried keeping the plastic looking new so it was pretty gray when I traded it in 2015. I'm going to trade my black truck in this next summer and my next color will be silver. (I don't think the black plastic once it turns grayish will look so bad)

I wouldn't recommend the Magic Eraser for use on black textured plastic. I know of several folks on other forums who have tried it on that stuff and ended up making an ever bigger mess. One (on F150Online) even had to go as far as replacing his door handles.

I have used The magic erasers before on tailgate handle. No issues. Anytime trying something out of the norm, you will want to do a Test area first before charging on a whole area

It takes a little more rubbing on the bed rail caps because it is kind of textured. Behind the mirrors it comes off pretty easy. Rubber window seals is the easiest to rub off.
