Hi guys, still working on my 03 Taco, Just got the used transfer case with a good actuator in today...

I read it 3 or more times, but I CANNOT find the post that stated:

""Shaft all the way forwards is **** 4WD""
""Shaft all the way back is **** 4WD""
and ""Shaft in the middle is **** 4WD""

I'll make a big write up when I'm done, please help me out if you could, thank you...

On the left if your in the drivers seat is the high low shift shaft. Low is backwards high is foreward neutral is in the middle. The right shift shaft is 4x4 back is 2wd forwards is 4x4.
This is looking at the parts the shifter or actuator move. Not the position of the shift lever .
I don't have a pic of the internals but this is the twin stick setup which works them independently.

You don’t have the knob? It’s labelled.

    If you have J-Shift:

    • 2HI — Resting Position
    • 4HI — Pull Down
    • N — Pull Down, Right, and Up
    • 4LO — Push Up from N
    If you have Push-Button 4WD:

    • 2HI — Resting Position
    • 4LO — Push Buttom, Pull Up
    • N — Middle Position
    • 4HI — Push Button, Pull Down

Mine are shift dog positions. (Under shift lever and actuator) Bartmaster1234's are shift lever and button positions.

Hello, I think you're on the right track. What I MEANT - It seems there are 3 positions that the linear shaft, driven by the electric actuator, has for the different selections.

It seems to have 3 positions and I had read that 1 was 4WD-H, 2 - 4WD-H, and 3 - 2WD high. I just cannot find that same post again...

Not the gear shift in the cab (I'm not that dumb, YET!!), rather that shaft your actuator runs.

Thank you everyone, I truly appreciate ALL of your help guys...

No one recalls the 3 positions the actuator shaft moves the transfer case forks?? Forwards, middle, back that's all; The guy even boasted that with a 12mm wrench, he can get a Toyota out of the trails just by moving that shaft in the 3 spots.
Well, I'll just start searching again because I read it in a few threads, thanks anyhow...

Are the positions mentioned in posts above not correct?

Use a picture. I'm betting the mental image isn't coming through, I get you but I don't have that part.

Your new (to you) one wasn't attached in the correct orientation?

Maybe when searching use the term 'clocking'. I didn't find anything either looking up your key words.

I must be overlooking a reply?? It seems the 1st people that replied thought I meant the shifter in the cab. I mean the rod actuated by the electric motor in your transfer case. The motor places it forwards, back, or in the middle to "engage" your front drive shaft.

Okay, I wrote this reply, then double checked. Everyone is referring to the shift knob/lever locations in the cab, I'm not seeing that answer....

I'll find it and post it here to help with the confusion...

Looking at the OP, not sure what he's asking as every position = 4wd...

FWIW every position will always be 2wd, the only thing that gets moved is whether or not the front output is engaged.

Mine is referring to the positions of the the shift dogs inside the tcase... the picture does yes show the shifter but it also shows what the two shafts and shift dogs you find below it do.

If you did have a the actuator fail it could be pulled off on a trail and select 4x4 or 2wd by moving the right shaft.

Okay, I figured out how to get pics on here to resolve any confusion.

I don't know how to time the contacts, or the actuator shaft to gear. This is all on my transfer case... 1st gen, it's different than all the other info I can find...

I need to time the rotary contacts, and time the gear onto the rack. There must be a procedure somewhere how to do this...

    Help....please...

See this last photo above ^ It needs to be orientated in there correctly, there are no match marks like I normally see Toyota supply us.

Thats the shaft I am asking the 3 positions for in photo #1 and #2

The 1st 2 photos are for timing that pinion gear on that rack...

Looks like my old jeeps T-10 , full forward on is gonna be 4Lo , pull back to first (center like position) will be 2Hi (or neutral for transfer depending which lever engages/disengages )& all the way back 4Hi, I think... I'm just going to shut up cause now I'M confused...:anonymous:

As far as anything accuating they should re-synche when energized like in a Elocker
