I finally got around to ordering and installing a Garmin Mini 2 with a Trail Grid Pro (Dongar copy) mirror adapter. Works great with my R3 and MirrorTap!

All you really need to go 10 over is some common sense and situational awareness. Radar detectors definitely can be helpful depending on how the officer uses it. Twenty over is where they come in handy, but I find being that vigilant all day can be exhausting. Last cross country trip we did 10 hour days for about 3k miles and I was smoked.

If I'm transmitting radar, I'm only doing it to confirm the speed because they've already caught my attention and I've already planned on stopping them. Fortunately for them I don't even carry a ticket book.

Agree... Back when the speed limit was 55 and radar tech was in its infancy, detectors made sense so you could drive 65 or 70.
But now that the speed limit in a lot of places is 75 or even 80 (looking at you Texas) and you can get away with 5 to 10 over in most places, I have to ask, "Do I really need to drive 90 to 100 miles per hour?"

No. No I don't. And 75 / 80 is plenty to get me to where I'm going without raising the attention of Johnny Law.

I know someone will say that the speeds are much lower in town on surface streets. Yes. But I'm too busy watching out for distracted soccer moms in minivans speeding between events for their kids to be driving more than 50/55 in a 45.

Having said all of that I still endorse (but don't run) radar detectors because you should have a right to know when your government is surveilling you.

These days, in this town, even if you pass a cop on traffic duty, they won't pull you until you're doing at least 90 and/or 20 over. Sometimes I've seen them ignore a 90 to wait for the 100 plus. And if you're doing that, then yes you damn well deserve to pay the stupidity-tax.

You guys can go fast enough in these trucks to require a radar detector?

yes, it's very easy. especially with urbanization.

all the farm land that used to have a 50mph speed limit now is subdivision, with no alterations to the roadway except now it's a 30 mph speed limit. real easy to fine ones self running 60 through there...

you guys apparently don't live in the NE, Land of the Parkway, with 50 & 55mph being the normal speed limit. and radar is not laser, so it's entirely untrue that your detector only goes off once you've been clocked, though that is a common misconception. which is fine - the fewer the number of drivers using detectors, the more effective they are for those that do use them.

    it's a numbers game.
