I am installing a new 7-pin tow connector. The wiring is straightforward except there is a yellow wire tapped onto the black (brake, I think) wire on the truck. The far end of that wire became disconnected since the last time I towed anything. At the time I just wrapped it around part of the bumper so it would stay put.

What does it connect to? I can't see any loose wires under the bumper to hook it up to.

    Thanks!

My guess would be the truck had a bed cap at one time, and this wire was for the center brake light on the cap...

Oh. Weird. It has a bed cap right now and the middle brake light works correctly, it's wired into the left brake light. Well then, no worries I guess I can trim it off safely.

    Thanks!

Not sure if either of these will help?

Don't feel bad, finding a wiring harness that won't cost $200 is kind of a challenge, and I still don't have a bracket for it. Mine will be zip tied on there.

Caps usually tie in to the brake light like you said but some folks use another brake light that goes in the hitch when not towing so this could have been power for that. Just go ahead and remove it

I forgot: I had taken the cap off and later put it back on. I didn't realize there was any wiring to the hitch, and there was also wiring to the brake light. Not sure what happened there because when I bought the cap the shop I purchased from installed it. I have no idea how the hitch wire was ever worked in there, but I guess it doesn't matter now since I removed the wire :)

I figure the redundant license plate lights are there for a reason. With just a single left you are looking at a ticket when it burns out. They are incandescent and, being on constantly with the headlights, will burn out a few during the life of the truck.. would suggest switching the remaining one to a high quality LED, but that was a chance I'm not willing to take. Is usually a fix-a-ticket but that involves a trip to the DMV, and fix-its are no longer free. or the CHP just writes an expensive ticket.
I do like the oem 16+ style 7/4 you used. I would have used one like that if I thought I could have fit it horizontally next to the plate.

No worries, I live in San Diego. You should see the shitpiles we share the roads with here. I'll never get a ticket for this

Same here in OK. Worst I've ever gotten was a written warning for a burned out headlight. And once I had a fuse burned out, didn't realize I had no tail lights. A cop followed me for several miles at 1:00 in the morning, didn't even pull me over. Not too long after that I looked in the mirror and my taillights are usually super bright, if I tap the brakes I can easily read signs facing the opposite direction, but this time I couldn't. I thought that was weird, then noticed some of the lights on the console were out. Pulled over and spent an hour on the side of the road figuring it out.

And only then did a cop pull over and see what was going on.
