Alright so I want to sell my f150 and buy a Tacoma. I currently have a f150 and a ranger. The f150 is obviously the stronger one but bad gas milage and vice versa for the ranger. I haul 2 quads ones a 400ex and a polaris sportsman, or 2 full size dirt bikes. I once towed all for in the ranger and got horrible gas millage and maxed out 50 mph on highway. I use my f150 4x4 when I go camping or on road trips and does very well.

    - will a 2005+ Tacoma do as bad as a 2002 ranger (4x4 v6) when hauling the same stuff.
    - will it compare to a f150 when going camping.
    - is the gas milage good on the Tacoma

I want to sell both my trucks for one Tacoma as I spend way to much for insurance on the f150 and only take it out once a month.

Normally I get around 20 on the highway and mid teens around town. Towing an 18' center console boat I see mid teens highway.

the 05+ tacoma will do better than the ranger i would think. but it depends on what engine you have in the ranger. they are not full sized trucks so i wouldnt tow anything out of its limits. thats what full sized trucks are for
    Edit: welcome to TW

I have a 4wd Double Cab and can consistently push 20 MPG (a little less in the winter). It tows well and I don't have the tow package on mine. I've towed well over 3,000 lbs and it will hold highway speeds just fine. The fuel economy does drop pretty significantly when towing or hauling but it has plenty of power. I've had Rangers in the past, a 1997 and a 2002, one was a 2.3 I4 and the other was the 3.0 V6 and I feel the Tacoma has much more power. I did consider a 4wd 4.0L Ranger when I bought my Tacoma and felt it was underpowered and was rated to get horrible fuel economy for the size of the truck. In my opinion, the Tacoma is a good common ground between a Ranger and a F-150.

FWIW, I came from a Z71 with the 5.3L V8. The Tacoma is obviously not a strong as the Chevy but it is capable, tows well and does a little better on fuel economy than the V8.

Thanks for all who've answered. The main reason I want to switch is because of gas consumption. I spent $500 more in December on gas than I did in November all because I took a weekend trip to San Diego to see the family. So in my opinion I don't think I need a full size truck since the most I haul is a utility trailer with quads and the bed full of camping stuff. So the only thing holding me back was thinking the ranger and tacoma were equal and wouldn't be able to haul good that one time of year I go camping.

Anyone know of one for sale near the west coast. I think I'll get around 20k for my fords so I don't want to spend more. I definitely need 4x4 and double cab. They are super expensive where I live and are making me consider other options. I know their cheaper east but can't really travel as I work 6 days a week.
