I am planning to purchase a 2015-2017 Taco. I like the 2015 styling, but the newer model is nice too. I'm wanting something that I will get many miles out of in the future. I'm currently driving a 2009 Dodge Ram that I inherited when my mom passed away. For 15 years prior to that I was driving VWs.
I definitely want a double cab, V6, with either a TRD or TSS package. Anything I should be aware of or looking out for in the 2015-2017 area?

TSS is a safety feature on 18’s. TRD is a trim package in either Off Road or Sport packages. Each with different standard mechanical and appearance options.

I would familiarize yourself with the different trims and start your research around what you will use the truck for. The Off road (OR) will have more Off Road capability standard while the Sport will be capable off road but more purpose built for on road use.

That is the 30 second intro and my $.02

Welcome! Sorry to hear about your mom.
TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. You can choose from the Sport, Off Road or Pro models. The basic model below the TRD is the SR5.
TSS stands for Toyota Safety Sense, it's only available on the 2018 models (I believe it's standard on all 2018s), it's the lane departure and pre collision warning system.

I'm familiar with the trims. I've always liked the Tacoma, just was into cars for a while. The TRD sport seems like the route I'm looking to take. I'd love a 4x4, but I don't think that I will use it enough to justify it. I'm wondering if there are any specific things to look for as far as years or engines to avoid.

Just trolling the thread title. Don't rule out a low mileage 2nd Gen, they are great trucks. Do some more research before you commit.

I thought TSS was only on Tundra models, until I saw a TSS Tacoma at Costco.

    1st gen Tacoma’s 2.7 4cyl 3.4 v6
    2nd gen Tacoma’s 2.7 4cyl 4.0 v6
    3rd gen Tacoma’s 2.7 4cyl 3.5 v6

All engines have been proven reliable with the exception of the 3.5 in the 3rd gen (hasn’t been out long enough to prove it’s durability)

I see, I don't think that's available in California. What does the TSS trim come with?

I test drove a 2016 V6 and a 2015 TRD off road. The TRD was way better. The TSS isn't my cup of tea.
