Anything that increases airflow through the engine will usually increase horsepower, but remember that the air/fuel ratio must be constant so more air means more fuel. So, an aftermarket exhaust may not provide better mpg, just more power and perhaps a different sound. Besides, the backpressure of the stock exhaust helps the engine generate more torque, which is more important than hp for real world driveability. If your stock exhaust is flowing normally and in decent condition and not rattling or rusting, leave it alone.

New plugs just did it for me!

    I'm back up to 100+ miles on a 1/4 of a tank!

    That's highway on the 4cyl 17gal tank.

How many miles on the odometer when you changed the plugs ? What kinda shape were they in ? Color ? Gap ? Which plugs did you use ? Mine is a 4 cyl 2.7 stick and I have never let plugs go 100,000 on anything I have owned like Toyota says to do so that's why I ask. Thanks.

fyi...not trying to sound like a dick...the button next to the quote button is multi-quote...it lets you quote multiple posts in one...

but on another note...does your engine knock/run rough/run like sht or anything? or does it seem to be operating normally, minus the gas milage? is their anything unusual for example white smoke coming out of your tailpipe?

    You don't want to know...

I let it go 103k on the original plugs. Really the mileage didn't start dropping until about 98k.

The old plugs looked pretty good really. They were obviously worn down quite a bit (I didn't measure the gap), but they were clean and a nice sand color.

I put dealer plugs back in it.

I wouldn't recommend going 100k on the original plugs, gas is expensive!

Just the spark plugs. Still the original coil packs.

Thats where I was at, around 75 on a 1/4... It sucked.

Thanks for your reply. Since you wouldn't recommend going 100k on the original plugs, what would you recommend ? Must have been good to see the nice sand color after 103K. Thanks for any info.

I guess really that's up to you. I will say the engine is also idling smoother than it ever has since I've owned it.

I bought it with around 72,000 miles on it, and I'm going to guess I noticed the rougher idling around the 85k area.

Really there is no harm in changing the plugs early, short of the wear it puts on the threads on a aluminum head.

If you are going to change them frequently, I would recommend doing it yourself, getting a good torque wrench, and putting them in to spec.

Just for clarification, we are talking about the 2.7 4 cylinder.

The v6 from what I'm told is supposed to have the plugs changed every 30,000 miles, so that might be a good reference.

If I were planning on keeping the truck too much longer (I plan on trading it in for a TRD), I would probably do the plugs, air filter, pvc valve, and any other relatively cheap components every 25-30k miles.

They are all pretty cheap and easy to replace, and will pay for themselves in the long run.

I was surprised to see how clean the plugs were. I wouldn't have believed there was 103k miles on them if it wasn't for the amount material chewed off...

I'm not afraid if the gas peddle and high rpm's on a regular basis either, so I don't really give carbon a chance to build up :D

I also do a lot of highway, 30k miles in about 7 months.

A7XTaco, Thanks for the reply and info. I have a 2.7 with about 35,000. I think I'll do as you suggest when the weather clears in NJ this Spring. Thanks again.

Thanks. I'm adding that and TB cleaner to the list. Shooting for March or April. Double ice storm here today - snow yesterday. Schools around here have used all their snow days and it's just the beginning of Feb.
