Another couple things to check would be the O2 sensor and the AFR sensor. I think the AFR is before the CAT and the O2 is after. The field service manual should have some simple ways to check them with a digital multimeter. A cheap DMM can be easily purchased from a Radio Shack for around $20 or less.

I always thought the oxygenated "winter blend" gas is intended to reduce ground-level air pollution because the inversion layers happen more often during the winter season. (Inversion layers are low-level clould layers that tend to trap the air underneath and poor ground-level air quality can result.) But for sure these blended fuels hurt gas mileage because of the lower energy content due to more ethanol.

Well now I know it might benefit to change the plugs a little early, and even though the motor runs great it would still be a good idea to clean the MAF and TB every so often (I'm at 55,000 miles right now and she purrs). Thx ppl.

this could be just as well because in California anything that maybe a little bit might help the environment CA wont hesitate to jump on board. Even at the expense of its citizens, however i still doubt that we have wintetr blend gas anywhere in the valley because nobody is talking about it

I'm confused on why you would check the O2 sensor? I thought when they went bad it would throw a check engine light.

    Reviving this thread

Getting around 11 mpg after getting 18-19 mpg a month ago

    My truck:
    New frame
    New exhaust and catalytic converter
    Wide tires
    1” lift
    5 speed manual trans
    K&N filter out
    Stock filter in
    Cleaned MAF
    Needle bearing shot
    Brakes not dragging I think
    Cap with a rack

    Up next:
    Check brakes
    Clean throttle body
    ECGS bushing finally
Local mechanic instead of dealer next Wednesday

@4cyltacoma looks like you got a new truck, but how did it go with the mpg’s on the 2nd gen

^ Might be worth creating a new thread since you (we) are now talking about a different truck.

    What makes you say that?

My tuck is a 2006 4 cylinder 4x4 just like the op originally posted about having bad gas mileage on

Your truck and the OP's truck may have started their lives as essentially the same truck. Now, the OP's truck has a cold air intake, and your truck has a lift, wide tires, exhaust and cats. All these mods could significantly affect fuel economy. So in the context of a fuel economy discussion, I would say your truck is considerably different than the OP's truck. Plus, the last post was over 3 years ago... that is what makes me suggest a new thread. I'm not saying it is wrong to revive this thread, but a new one might produce more / better replies to your question. My suggestion was meant to be helpful :)

    No problem! Helpfulness is appreciated

I thought he had a third GEN by the look of the profile picture

I’m going to heed your advice and start a new thread, probably when I have some more information instead of just shit gas mileage LOL

SR5 bumper with factory hitch. Side steps. White bedliner paint job. Jerry can holder. Led lgithbar, aftermarket fog lights, aftermarket horn. Interior LED lights. 235/75R15 tires. Looking for 8.4" third with 4.10 gears
First post! This thread made me create an account. I had the exact mpg loss in my 4banger. Try replacing the pcv valve!
