They're literally balancing the tires AS WE SPEAK. Should I have them check wheel bearings?

I personally wouldn’t trust tire installers to this.

I mean, if they say they’re bad and can show you, that’s at least something, but if they say they’re fine, I wouldn’t necessarily believe it.

He did the tire grab just now.. cuz I briefly mentioned it. And the sound.. it's the manager, he said he has a Tacoma. Don't see one here tho.

We'll see what this dude says once tires are on.

And I'll go try 4-wheel here in a minute

Ok this dude said he thinks wheel bearing.. right side.

Spun the tire on lift and said he could "feel the vibration)... Said wheel bearings

Also quoted $1000 to do both sides. Lol. No thx. I'll find a small shop to do it.

I guess wheel bearings are somewhat common at 100k?

Did the tire balancing fix the steering wheel vibration?

Pretty crazy I've never seen a wheel shake that much.

Steering wheel shake is gone. Rides pretty smooth now, but I'm still getting the sound from what's likely the wheel bearing.

So question, is it safe to drive on? The wheel bearing is pretty stable (no wiggle) and the tire shop said I should fix it soon, but I can drive on it for now..

I'm wondering what you guys think.

I drove my old Saab with noisy wheel bearings for about 1500 miles before I sold it :notsure:
Better to not do what I did tho

Lol. After looking into it.. Yeah I probably shouldn't drive on it until I get er fixed.

If the wheel bearing fails, or freezes up while driving, and stops spinning.... I'll be busting all sorts of shit at the least, and turning sideways into a wall at the worst.

    I think I'll pass.

from my experience a bad wheel bearing will hum intermittently very loudly, and gets worse/better at certain speeds. From the video it seems like its a constant roar rather than the intermittent humming im used to. I'd make sure you know its the bearing before you starting throwing money around.

Have you cleaned the mud off the drive shaft and greased the u-joints?

It is a constant sound, never cuts out. Gets louder the faster I go... Doesn't change when I turn. It does "sound" like it's coming from the front. But I can't really tell..

I was going to grease the u-joints today. Should I try that before I do a bearing? And the driveshaft actually doesn't have too much mud on it

Honestly sounds more like a u-joint. like i said the noise is a hUUUUMMm (quiet) HUUUmmm (quiet) and just keeps repeating. Its enough that it'll give you a headache. Now i'm no mechanic, just every time i've had a bearing go on a car its always the same noise for me.

Is there any easy way to check my u-joints?

Greaseable u-joints should be serviced with every oil change.

The only way to truly check them is to take the caps off the ends and look at the needle bearings. This requires the drive shaft to be taken apart, so it doesn’t really make sense to check them.

Mine were making more noise in reverse than they would in drive but the needle bearings were toast from one too many mudding adventures. The dirty water contaminates them and ruins the grease.
