Went from 3rd Gen Taco to 3GT4R to 2nd Gen Taco and finally a V8 4GT4R.
I also have mine behind the tail light. When I get my truck back I will check to see if the entire line is OK and see if there is a potential blockage from either the nipple or the breather. I ended up pushing the shit out of the plastic breather into my line but I can see the indentation so I dont think anything has broken. I feel like I might have used a 3/8ths line instead of a 1/2 inch...

ALSO - just received a text from my friend who is an adviser there and here is what they said

"Good news. No other leaks found. Looks like the gasket went out. We replaced the cover and refilled with new fluid. No internal damage either."

That was just one side. Part 2 was the other side.
As far I know they replaced my entire carrier gears and all, but kept the axel.

Eh. To screws for the light to pop out isn't even enough for me to crack a beer. Haha!

If I ever check mine, I will be moving it to a better location. I'm assuming that it will be good for life unless I really swamp it or see serious mud. My bet is that we'd see degradation of the fuel line on the nipple side before there are any worries on the breather end.

I just had my truck at the stealership for the 15,000 mile service. Before taking it in I had a list of things I wanted them to look at. The rear diff seeping being one of them. It wasn't leaking bad at all but just at the seal. This was a know problem on the 2016s. They looked at it and said it was in fact seeping and per toyota corporate they were to re torque to spec and check it again at the 20,000 mile service. I personally don't think the breather mod effected this just think it's an issue regardless. My 2 cents

Yeah two bolts ain't bad. But it's not as easy as just a visual inspection. I'm paranoid so I like to watch stuff haha.

IDK what it is for the 3rd gen but from what I was reading from other threads its 18ft-lbs but don't quote me on that bc I also heard some people stripping bolts and making it worse

Just got off 30 day vacation (ban) and been waiting to post.

These Toyota stock breather valves get stuck and blow gear oil past seals and gaskets and create all the seaping that everyone is complaining about. Look it up, it’s a huge problem.

A couple weeks ago I did the ARB rear diff breather relocation and REPLACED the one way OEM breather with the ARB two way breather.

When I unscrewed the OEM breather a shit ton of air came out of the rear diff I mean a ton, it was highly pressurized. I thought it was odd and checked the breather valve, it was closed both ways. Nothing in, nothing out.

These one way valves become no way valves and pressurize the diffs and Tcase (I suspect) and blow gear oil through the seals and creates the seaping that everyone is experiencing. Change these out to completely open two way breathers as soon as you can. Relocating the existing OEM breather is of no help.

If you don’t believe me, do a search on how many members have blown seals and seaping diff gaskets.

Then the seepage must’ve definitely been caused prior to me putting my two way breather in. When I took my union nipple off to put th OEM plug pack on there was no pressure in the diff and was extremely easy to take off.

Anyways attached is my warranty work. New gasket and rear diff oil!

Here’s the thing, a lot of members have had the new gasket and retorque and it still seeps out. The OEM breather gets clogged and stuck.

I don’t have the oem breather on there any longer.

Side note - are you referring to the piss poor breather that came with the truck OR the breather that is still OEM but needed to purchase separately from Toyota?

I’m talking about whatever Toyota OEM puts on there, it’s a one way breather meaning air goes out and no air goes in. It gets clogged and old and sometimes filled with fluid and becomes a no way breather valve, nothing in and nothing out and the case become highly pressurized. I know because mine did this.

I’ve changed out the rear to the ARB two way relocated to the bed storage and doing the front diff, Tcase and manual trans breathers in the front to two ways soon, as well.

Here’s the ARB which is completely open on both ends.
