I am brand new to this site, and have been unable to read many threads on the rear diff. I Tow about every other week around 4000lbs. I do not have the tow package, and it tows well. My question is.. The scheduled maintenance calls for a Diff Fuild change at 15k... Am I reading it correctly, opinions please!

i think the manual calls for diff service every 30k, sooner if you tow, and in your case, 15k is probably a good limit for you. do you have and open diff, or the lsd??

Well, I didn't pay for LSD.. so I am guessing I do not. I have Very little slip, even when attempting to make one wheel spin.. is it possible that it is LSD, and they didn't tell me? Are there part numbers on the diff, that I can Identify it with?

What oil should be used? Should I buy it from Toyota, or is there something better available?

    Thanks!
    Sam

crawl under the truck and look on the rear diff........there should be an lsd sticker if in fact it is an lad diff. if it is, you can get the oil from the dealer, or you can use and 80w90 and a bottle of limited slip additive, if its an open diff.......you can use 75w90 or 80w90. if you want something good in there, if its an lsd......use some royal purple 75w90 synthetic and a little lsd additive. synthetic makes a good difference on these diffs.

yeah, should be right about 3 quarts. if its the lsd......you WILL HAVE TO HAVE THE RIGHT OIL/ADDITIVE, or the rear end will grind and squeal. after you look under the truck.....let us know what the sticker says.

Sticker on Diff was C3 052 Sky and some other stuff.. on the door jam was A04A Looks, like it's 7.5", not sure on ratio (I thought all new Tacoma's were 4.10), and Open Diff.. no LSD. I read several post with different ideas on the rear Axle ratio, but I could swear I read somewhere it was a 4.10... ideas?

    -Sam

PS- wonder if it's easy to upgrade to LSD, or Locking..??

hmmmmm.....sounds like its an open diff then. you can swap out the fluid with 75w90 mobil1 or royal purple then(or a non synthetic 80w90) if you want too. the synthetic is really good for the diff.

not exactly sure what the ratio is.....but im pretty sure the rear end is either an 8 inch or and 8.4......pretty sure anyway.

not sure how hard an lsd swap in would be.

if this is the case.....he will definitely need the lsd additive, since the mobil1 doesnt have enough in it. either that....or royal purple.

OOPS! I guess I should change mine, 92,000 miles & I have never changed it.
The dealer never has suggested it either, when trying to con/get me to do other services.

I did do an oil change today with Mobil 1 Syn 0W30. Thanks Tacomaman for suggesting it. I bought it at Walmart like you suggested. Just FYI: I was in Advanced auto parts the other day getting irridium plugs. Mobil 1 syn was cheaper there than Wally world. I was shocked! I checked Costco today & 6 bottles was way too exspensive, about $6 more than Advanced.

How in the world do you know that? I have looked everywhere online, and NOT been able find the same information.. It's an 07 model, sr5 DC, 2wd. According to the link below, it's open (look at chart on the bottom). I am coming to the conclusion, no one "really" knows.. I wish it was an 8.4", LSD. Can you let me in on your Source Chris4x4? And Thanks for your Input.
