Hello, just picked up this 2008 Tacoma with new frame and excellent body 2.7 eng. 4x4 5 sp. 148000 miles. I'm hearing a growl and it seems to be coming from the rear end, ONLY happens when i'm neither giving it gas or braking faster i'm going the louder the noise, changed u-joints didn't help, changed rear oil no help...i'm stumped...I know someone on here has the answer

Real wheel bearing? I had one go bad on my 2013 and it was loudest when coasting to a stop.

My rear bearing resonated through the whole cabin. Started about 20. Howled between 50-60.

I have an 09 and my differential started howling at 74000. I now have 142000 and it is actually a little quieter. I'm thinking the pinion gear loosened but the gears eventually wore in and remeshed? Not really sure. It does change tone under accel/decell.

A howling sound on deceleration is from loosened preload of the pinion bearing

A howling sound during acceleration is from worn pinion bearing

A continuous low pitched rumbling sound that is heard above 20mph is worn Carrier bearings
