I'd try to get it totaled or whatever if they want to replace the frame.

What I'd love to know is what the hell the driver of the Jeep was doing. My bet is they were looking at their phone. Really chaps my ass to even think that's the likely cause of this whole accident.

Hope everything turns out for the best OP.

Does a repaired frame affect the trade in value?

Rear end collisions are way up due to cell phone use and distraction.

Some states passed laws and collisions went down. But after awhile they go back up.

Take careful notice of the drivers in oncoming traffic between 4-6PM on a Friday, lots of folks are getting off work and about 30-40% are one of the following:

    1. Talking on a cell phone held in hand.

    2. Looking down at their cell phone and/or texting.

    3. Talking on their cell phone via hands free.

Yes a repaired frame significantly reduces value, especially on a truck. I wouldn't use one as a work truck. Last thing you want is a weakened frame giving up when towing or a load close to capacity. Too much too lose in life and liability. That is why pickups tend to keep value... They always have a hard life ahead of you sell them, unless the frame or drivetrain is crap. Body panels, no one cares about.

I'd want them to put it in writing that the frame is structurally as strong as it was prior to the accident. They will never do that because of the liability they assume. Metal fatigues significantly when it's past it's memory point.

Meh, my frame was damaged on a 4 month old 4R and they fixed it.
Really? Cause they cut out and replaced the rear section of my frame on a 4 month old 4R. If they can meet the specs they’ll do a frame repair.

Or they cut and weld in a new section. Ask me how I know.

Do you normally drive around with propane tanks in the rear of your truck?

I’m just going off what the insurance company will probably do. Obviously they have a couple of routes they can go. However If you look at an official Toyota repair manual for the frame it states to not perform any welding or torching as it will actually weaken the high strength steel. Can the frame be cut, welded, and torched? Sure, it’s metal. With how sue crazy people a lot of insurance companies, and collision shops don’t want the added liability. If it’s not recommended by the manufacturer, than they would rather total it out, salvage the title and send it to auction. They rather have backyard Billy sell it out of his front yard.

Also a 4Runner has a completely different frame with completely different alloys/compounds. Not sure of the recommended repair procedure for they 4Runner, but maybe toyota doesn’t go against frame repairs on them, vs like they do on the 3rd gens.

A frame replacement will show up on a CarFax as severe damage.

If the frame is bent and you plan on keeping it (i.e. it’s not a lease), then I’d demand they total it / replace the frame.

Which isn’t to say I wouldn’t take a lump sum for “depreciation” and live with the imperfection.

Rather insurance tried to repair my fiancé’s unibody car but they never could get it quite right. It looked perfect, but the suspension always made a noise and seemed to get “caught” / didn’t feel right over turns that had a bump in them. Thankfully it was a lease and the dealer took it back no problem.

The issue is they swore up and down it was all within spec and maybe it was, but by the time insurance spent the money on repairs they weren’t too cooperative listening to remaining complaints.

That said, it doesn’t look bad.
