At night when I park my truck I use the emergency brake. When I go to start my truck in the morning the rear passenger brake is locked up. It's like the pressure stays with the E brake even after it's released. Some times it's more stuck than others. Sometimes I can put it in 4wd low and drive back and forward and it may come undone. Once I pumped the brakes over and over while going forwards and backward and it came undone. now, however, it won't budge. I even engaged the locker to force it to move and I just stalled over and over. Why is it doing this?

is it getting freezing cold at night?

Avoid using the parking brake if it's cold wet and freezing.

Never use parking brake if temp is 32F or less.

Back in the old days when I was a mechanic we would spray the parking brake cables with penetrating oil to keep them from freezing up. I haven’t thought about that in years until I got on this forum and saw that some Tacos were doing this. Time to crawl under my truck!

Mine froze the other day without the parking brake on. The electronic brake booster locked all the wheels (my best educated guess). Had to cycle power to the vehicle to get it to unlock the brakes.

This is total crap. Are we saying that Toyota cannot build an e brake on trucks that does not freeze and lock up the rear wheels in winter???
Mine is 2016 and has gotten stuck more than three times already. The dealership has worked on it twice and they cannot figure out what’s going on and their mechanics appear to have just left puberty.
It spent the whole last weekend being worked on and observed. Today is snowing and cold and it is stuck again. Total bullshit!!!
I previously owned a 97 Ranger 4x4 which I had for 18 years and never did this crap!!! I thought Toyotas were the better brand.

It’s just a normal drum brake issue, which is why only a few really cheap cars and no other truck available in the us automotive industry still uses drum brakes.

Jesus, another parking brake lock up in the winter thread?

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/frozen-e-brake.525447/

This thread has links cautioning using the parking brake in the winter. It also includes a link with a caution listed in the owners manual.

Google "parking brake frozen in the winter" and you'll get all kinds of makes and models affected including BMWs with disc brakes.

It's not just a Tacoma thing, a Toyota thing or a drum thing, it's a winter parking brake thing.

My next door neighbor woke up yesterday morning with his rear drum brakes locked up and had a tow truck pick it up to take it to the local Toyota dealer. The tow truck dragged one rear wheel up onto the platform. One of the rear wheels was not locked up while the other was. The Toyota mechanic stated the next day that a c clip broke off causing the cable to rub on the ??? Leaf spring??? and tore it up??? His truck is the same year make and model as mine. 2016 Toyota off road.. I have parked my truck with the nose down hill and so far it has released the e brake every morning> I do not know, I have owed several other trucks(Chevy, Dodge, Ford, and one 1981 Toyota). in my lifetime, all with drum brakes and have never had any problems like my Tacoma is having.. I wish Toyota would have used disc brakes on the rear like the Land Cruisers??

I have a 2007 Volvo that did this a few times on me after leaving the car parked for a couple of days. Eventually, I figured out the traction control system was to blame.

My theory is that during the winter or after lots of rain, one of the brakes would stick a little, and the overly ambitious traction control system would compensate by matching brake action on the other wheels, and thus get stuck in a vicious cycle. Turning off traction control fixed the situation in my case. Maybe that's what's happening here too.
