I've got a 2006 tacoma which i take care of meticulously. Today i was going to leave for school and the right rear tire was locked up. I thought it might have been frozen since I just got it washed yesterday, and usually when that happens i just give it more gas and break the frozen hold. Today this was not the case, the wheel actually was dragging on the ground.

I don't think this is a parking break issue because I got my floor jack and lifted the front end off the ground, both wheels spun. I lifted the back end and the drivers rear was continuously rotating and the passenger side had a little forward and backward motion but was locked up.

What could have happened overnight while the truck was sitting to lock the wheel up like that?

    Anyone have any suggestions???

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I always leave the parking brake off when I wash it. Sounds like it’s seized up. The one time it happened with mine I just gassed it out of the driveway and it released.

    Why?

Makes sense, as earlier you said

Yep. Pull the wheel and drum off and see what's going on. You may have to back off on the adjuster to get the drum to release.

I had this happen just the other day in my garage after sitting for 3 days. I backed it up and gave it some throttle, after about 2 feet mine released. They are more likely to release if you're driving in reverse rather than forward. Mine hasn't seized back up since. Just FYI, YMMV.

I lifted it off the ground to see if i had a seized bearing or see if the gears were fucked or if i could hear something. At the time i didn't know if it was the front end or the rear.

i tried going in reverse and forward it was dragging in both directions. I even had to get my dad to get his jeep and pull me out of the street! It wasn't going anywhere...
I had it towed to a local garage and the tow truck driver seems to thing its the drum break since it happened over night.

I'm just waiting for a phone call now.

I took it through an automated car wash and drove it home afterwards. I've never had this problem the entire time I've had the truck, so I think its something that broke - drum springs or something. I park with my ebrake on, i've accidentally left it on and pulled away before and its just given me resistance, never dragged a wheel.

So this happens in Hawaii all the time with these model Tacomas , one of the springs binds up in the rear drum assembly ... if your tire locks up again

Simply pull your you E/PARKING BRAKE LEVER to engage the brake again and tap the brake pedal as you release the parking brake ... works everytime

I'm in hawaii too. Happens to me. First few times I was able to pop it. Then the last 2 times I had to have truck towed to toyota.

The last time it was super stuck. I was turning around in my street and as I drove into the street it seized in the middle of the road. Toyota was surprised how seized it was and they finally took drum apart and it was a mess. They cleaned it out and it's been fine since. BUT as a precaution, after I wash I always leave brake off and chock the wheels. I know it's lame but it works.

POiYota, I'll have to remember that next time if/it gets stuck.

I live on the coast of Fl., no issues.

Thousands live on the eastern seaboard and no problems.

Its why I wondered about the HI specific thoughts............

hmmm, maybe it's a statistics thing since there are probably more tacomas per person cause EVERYONE has a tacoma in Hawaii.

seriously tho, it's a good question.

Where I live and see it happen its muddy , wet , salty and lots of sand ... my brother in law had that issue in his 06 , and somehow figured it out randomly .. the next few times we seen it happen to others told them and it seemed to work ..
I think It's something with the bottom spring of the brake assembly hanging up on that guide not sure if sand gets stuck or it's the mud ?? Or mixed together it's like concrete

My truck was never in sand. Toyota asked me if I trailer a boat because the corrosion in the brakes looked like a truck what was in the salt water a lot

Interesting. So do you guys periodically (like annually) inspect, clean, lube and adjust your brakes? Or just roll till they wear out? I really mean 'everyone' here, not just folks in HI. And the more you use the truck off road, boat launching, etc, the more important this becomes and the more frequent it needs to be.

I realize most folks never look at drum brakes because they don't feel comfortable with what they are looking at. But it is part of basic maintenance.

Other than some random hardware breakage causing it to 'throw a shoe', or a water event followed by a freeze, there's no hardware related reason I can think of for a rear drum to seize.

Saw a third gen come into the shop one day with maybe 5k on it, well i heard it before i saw it. Right rear wheel was dragging from the door all the way to the guys bay. Gave him like 2 hours as he was looking at everything brake and bearing related and i asked him what was wrong with it and hes just like "Dude i have no idea im so confused by this thing" cleaned the rear brakes and made sure everything was in place, readjusted them and boom drove right out of the lift no problem. Its a Taco thing i guess

Not HI specific. I don't know one Tacoma owner that this has happened to.
