I'm not mechanically inclined so when they completely break, I'll take the truck to a mechanic. They are completely fine except for those few events.

I could be wrong but I believe the exact issue was the shoe was seizing to the drum. Water couldn't drain out from the drum and when parking brake was applied, the shoe and drum seized.

I should also add that I pushed for the rear brakes to be replaced since it was under warranty and also the second time I had to tow it to toyota.

It took 2 days to get fixed, they had to send pictures off to somewhere (headquarters?) to see if it warranted replacement but OF COURSE IT DIDN'T.

If you're familiar with the rear brake components in the tacoma .. the spring on the bottom has a guide of some sort and I pretty sure it catches on that guide ....

In the first post OP claims to take meticulous care of his truck but usually when the brake gets stuck he just gasses it and it breaks loose. When something goes wrong with my truck that I take reasonable care of I figure out what is wrong and fix it. Gassing it to get it to break loose isn’t what I would call meticulous care. Hope you get it fixed.

I can relate to OP. I take really good care of my truck. First few times this happened, the brake was clearly stuck but upon giving it a little more gas, it'd pop loose and be fine. Sometimes it'd pop loose fairly easy, sometimes needed a little more gas. So I don't think we can make judgements by what the OP tried to do. I'm sure his struck is well cared for.

I’m not convinced by your argument. Having to give it a little gas sometimes and more other times indicates a chronic problem. But I digress...it’s your truck do whatever makes you happy. I’d rather fix it and move on. Not saying I’m right but that’s my process.

Happened to me mulitple times. Usually after i washed my truck and parked it with the parking brake engaged. I learned after a couple times of it happening to not engage the parking brake after washing it. I feel like i read somewhere on here that its a combination of the brake dust, water, flash rust and the parking brake being engaged that causes that mixture to be almost like a cement/glue mixture that causes it to lock up. I replaced the rear drum brakes, shoes and hardware with new and it has not locked up since.

holy cow, i'll have to read all these replies when i get home today but as an update: I had it towed to a local garage and they confirmed that my parking break cable seized in place. I've been driving in a lot of salt because of winter. My truck is getting both passenger and drivers break cables today. parts labor and towing is 440$.

thanks everyone! i love you guys.

It happens to semis all the time even not in salty climates the drums rust to the shoes. Driving with the axles locked usually breaks them free but if not you just beat the drum with a hammer with the parking brake released to free them

Thanks for letting us know the result.

Now then, I'd be doing some serious frame inspection. I'm not talking about sticking your head under and peeking.

I'm talking probing with a pry bar, banging with a ball peen, inspecting the insides with a borescope.

What that much corrosion on a semi sealed system (sheathed brake cable) that should have been regularly washed and lubed under the meticulous care plan, the frame could be in trouble.
