Because Tacoma boys think drums are just as good as disks. They only say this because they have drums.

If I had a free choice, of course I'd take 4 wheel discs. Duh!

How much did the conversion cost?

I'm okay with rear drums since they only do about 25% of the braking anyways.

I've had issues like this a few times in the winter. Issues being my truck is frozen in place and i need to gas it to break the hold. I just got it washed the night before and the temps were under 30 so i figured the water from the car wash did the same shit. This was not the case this time obviously.
And yes, i do take very good care of it, i've never even had it above 4k rpms - no red lines, no brake stands, no doughnuts, no excessive abuse, changing all the fluids when they need it, replacing things before they break, keeping it clean and waxed so yeah i do take care of it.

my frame was actually recalled in 2014, the extent of my frame being rusty is limited to the welds, they're just starting to rust. I'm thinking about painting the frame soon. Other than that there's no rust on my frame besides the rear diff.

Here are two pictures of my driveway and the skid marks I made. First I tried gassing it in 2wd with no results i wasn't moving at all. I then put it in 4wd and made it half way out my driveway. By this point i knew i was fucked and got my dad to pull my out of the street with his rubicon.

Glad you got it fixed. Too bad it cost so much. Sounds like you keep it clean. Disc brakes have problems too but they do look cool.

I think it was like $200 for the brake mount. It was retardedly easy, just have to cut the drum brake mount off with a grinder or plasma cutter then bolt the new one up. I'll be switching these out when they get worn for larger calipers and rotors without a parking brake since I don't need it anymore.

But didn't you have to buy all the other parts?

Yeah. You'll have to buy a caliper, rotor, and soft line. The only reason I didn't list them is because the huge price variations in OEM new, used, rebuilt, or aftermarket parts.

After switching to E rated 33's I was getting some nasty brake fade on long descents to the point of smoking and inability to stop. I was surprised that after abusing the hell out of the OEM setup I put 78k on OEM pads & rotors and it still had plenty of life left and no warping. With Tundra fronts, 4runner rears, and no ABS actuator running 35" M/T's I drive the same areas even harder than before and haven't had any significant fading. The only issue is you'll need proportioning valves, or a 4runner MC if you ever disengage ABS because the rears will lock up before the fronts.

I guess I was trying to ask what was the total cost of the conversion?

I bought new aftermarket calipers and high end rotors. Probably spent around $800 all said and done. That includes new axle seals, studs, etc. If you're looking to buy used parts and do it cost effectively it'd probably be around $350-400.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but having a similar problem.

You had your rear wheels seize up, while already moving? That's what mine are doing, and I can't tell if it's typical parking brake freeze or something more. To me, parking brake freeze happens immediately after releasing the brake, before the truck starts to move. But for me it happens after moving the truck a few feet before things lock up.

Did it ever happen again after you cleaned out the rear drums?

yup. I’d roll forward and “chunk!” And the drums would lock up. I was turning around on my street and got stuck in the middle of the street.

since having it cleaned out I haven’t had issues. I also don’t engage the parking brake after I wash my truck.
