so I did some searching but didn't find any 12+ folks complaining of whine. Figured these trucks have few quirks and l hope this is one and not the pinion gear about to snap.

2015 5k miles Peerunner stock tire/no lift. It isn't driven hard really all highway miles.

Never really drive with music down but did today and noticed a loud rear end whine at 55-60ish mph when decelerating.

Just seeing if anyone has any ideas before I call dealer on Monday.

    *UPDATE*

Went to dealer yesterday, Turns out the rear end is failing, and will be replaced next week. When they tear it down i will post pics and info of why it failed

    New update 3/22

Carrier bearing took a dump causing extra load on differential that caused edges of gears to wear down which caused my whine is what they said. So now I have a new differential at only 8k miles

Likely driveline noise rather than pinion gear, based on the fact that it's on deceleration.

Tacomas are really fairly noisy trucks. You can drive yourself absolutely ape-shit-crazy trying to diagnose every little sound. Interaction with a dealer over "my truck makes a noise" is likely to waste your time and have an unsatisfying result anyway.

And Tacomas have a long powertrain warranty. In the unlikely event it turns out there's a differential problem, it'll still be warranted.

My advice: don't sweat it and enjoy your truck.

Whining on decelaration normally means you need different shims to correct backlash. Back lash should be .005 to .007

I just replaced the rear end in my 2013 trd sport and getting the Shims right is what made my new rear really quiet

It is rare that a rear diff is quiet when slowing down in gear. As stated you have a 60K mile warranty. No worries.

I'm not worried one bit, as I am a seasoned mechanic myself, but like bjmoose said they are noisy and I was just curious if this was one of those quirks about these trucks. This is my first taco, and I'm still learning their funny little bits about em. Thanks for the input folks :D

Mine has done the exact same thing since it was new. Glad to hear I'm not alone. 44k miles and a rear diff fluid change have passed and it still does it, no better and no worse. I'm assuming this is a non-issue and haven't had it checked out.

The rear diff on my 2011 2.7 started whining after a few days of mudding around (getting pulled out by other tacomas). I drove it from the Bay Area to Los Angeles after that and the noise. Just drive it and it will break in more.

Crazy it failed with hardly any miles. My truck gets rallied pretty damn hard with 33" MT tires and it's hanging in there good. Are the 4x4 and pre-runner different rear ends?

    pinon bearings.

Moms 4 runner had the same whine on decel from the rear end... due to bad pinion bearings from oil that had never been changed at 120k miles.

Needless to say there is a reason why i changed the gear oil in my rear diff at all of 6k miles to get the nasty break in oil out.

I'm guessing your rear was low on fluid from the dealer. Or you got some lemon bearings/gears that failed.

I used to hear a rear end whine when former girlfriend complained that her ass was too big (it was). So now both are gone
