My new '13 Sport makes a errrkkk noise for a couple seconds everytime I turn off the ignition.
I called Toyota care 1-800#, was told this is not normal and contact my local dealership.

Dealership thinks noise is coming from the air pump, they need to record the noise and include in DPR. They did a vehicle comparison with in stock units, spoke to the local FTS.

They hava a TAS case opened and DPR filled out.

I was told by a Toyota shop foremand that the Tundra's had a similiar issue and it was an actual part failure and the noise was the beginning signs of a failure.
With the Tacoma they claim the noise is considered part of the system function. If Toyota Motor Corp receives enough negative customer feedback they may redesign the system to minimize the noise, per shop foreman.

Hopefully Toyota Motor Corp and your local Dealership will receive an abundant of these complaints to warrant a RECALL if your '13 has this issue please be pro-active.

Fyi- I do not know what DPR, FTS or TAS abbreviation stand for.

At least you posted some helpful info, most new users come here and bombard the forums with questions. You are not the only one having this issue though, there have been several threads with this already.

Yeah this sound is normal on the 12's-13's with the redesigned emissions system.

DPR: Dealer product report. The dealer submits out of the ordinary issues to corporate.

FTS: Field Technical Specialist. These guys are sent from corporate to investigate special issues on vehicles that may be hard or impossible to figure out.

TAS: I cannot remember the specific meaning, but it is the Technical Assistance hotline for Toyota and Lexus Techs that need help with an automotive related issue.

IF the noise you are hearing is the smog air pump shutting down, it is not dangerous and will not be a recall. It does seem to be annoying to a lot of new Tacoma owners, so it could develop into a reflash procedure, and could turn into a TSIB, which is a technical service bulletin.

I also contacted Toyota and took it in to have it looked at and as usual they said it is normal. I owned a 2007-2011 Tacoma and no noise so it's something they did on the 2013 and I don't like it. Keep the complaints coming and hopfully they will figure it out!!

Mine too, I'm not sure why everyone thinks modern cars shouldn't make any noises. It's pretty obviously an electric motor/blower sound, at least to me.

My 2013 also does it, before I bought it the salesman pointed it out. Said it was normal on 2013.

My '12 only does it if the engine is only ran for a minute or two, like backing out of the garage or something, never after full warm up.

Mine makes a noise after shutting off, sounds like it comes from the air tube to the fender.

Basically it's how you can hear a cold air intake sucking air in, its basically just blowing it back out once you kill the engine and it stops sucking

I hear it all the time, after I turn it off.
I just thought it is some sort of air system, never bothered me. Figured it is normal since it happened since day 1

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
Mine does it after I turn it off. It also cycles the fuel pump (or some thing else under the truck) at random times throughout the night and day when parked. Couldn't figure out what was humming in the garage, finally isolated it to underside of truck.

My '12 does EXACTLY like that. If yours is similar then it's normal.
