Being a radio guy I couldnt stay away:D-CB operates at the 27 MHZ area which is called HF (high frequency) which is basically "high AM". VHF operates in the area from 108-174MHZ, which is basically "high FM" Amateur radio guys operate on VHF and require testing and licensing.
The marine channels operate around 156-159MHZ and the users here are licensed too:)

Ive got the same radio. Works great, and you can always tune on the fly. Having the weather band is a great +.

The only neg is finding a place for it. Mine is wedged by the console on the passenger side.

Maybe black friday you can find a great deal.

I was just looking at this one. It is the Blue Tooth one from Cobra and it sounds pretty sweet. I might have to look into getting one of these .

Saw that coming a mile away.

I had the Uniden 520XL in the Tacoma and couldn't bring myself to hack away anything to permanently mount it so I had it as kinda a plug and play kit with a Wilson magnetic mount antenna.

Now with the FJ... I've got a Cobra 75WXST installed and tuned on a 4' Firestik. The thing is sweet and sounds good. Thinking about getting a remote speaker for it though and mounting it in the console.

Get a good one. Don't mess around with a POS or you'll regret it. (That is my $0.02 worth).

I couldn't agree more. I had this very same model first in my '01 Tacoma and then in my "Ol' POS" and it operated beautifully on trips back and forth between Montana and the SoCal Empire. I have yet to find a good mounting spot for my '06, when I do I'll certainly set it back up.

My deck sticks out because I was cheap when I installed it, and made a custom deck mount. (Yeah, I welded some crap together). I now have the stock deck back in the Tacoma because I sold my JL Audio 12W7, and 1000/1 amp. The deck is now in the Prelude. The Prelude is the bitch vehicle. :D

Its not really the radio itself that matters, its the antenna, get a good one, and get the SWRs set.
what ever radio you go with, find a shop that will Tune and Peak it :D
    Ive got the Cobra

I have a good mount location for a small unit-the underside of the steering column shroud. On my 1st-gen, that area is strong thick plastic more than adequate and I have my scanner there. Only thing is to view the unit for settings I need to tilt the wheel up but no biggie-I do settings when stopped anyway.
You guys could mount yours there and put a mike clip right on the lower dash or the side of the steering column for quick access:)

I just have this pic before I installed the scanner-where I mounted it, more specifically, was on that "lower lip" area where the steering column comes out of the dash-not on the actual column. Ingress/egress is not an issue ( only grazed the unit w/ my knee twice)
I dont know if you guys w/the 2nd gens have the same thing there but you should explore that area for possibility because it's a good ergonomic position for radio gear that gets overlooked:)
