Sorry to ressuurect this thread but I am looking for advice. I have a single tow hook/recovery hook on the front of my truck and some weird slots on the back. Should I get a receiver shackle for the back since i do not have a tow hitch or just stick to the slots and hook if i need to help tow someone (today I almost had to do that).

Snatch strap to bounce pull someone here.

Warfab skid has a tow point: https://warfabarmor.com/products/sheridan-hitch-skid

Otherwise, you can get one of these.

You can find a couple tow points for the front here: https://www.bpfabricating.com/products/tacoma-recovery-tow-hook

    and here: https://arbusa.com/toyota-tacoma-2016-on/bumpers-protection-equipment/recovery-points/

Or you can get a front hitch mount from e-trailer here or even a hidden winch mount from US OffRoad here or RRW here

    Plenty of threads on this:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/snatch-kinetic-vs-tow-rope-strap.609448/

The front OEM hook is rated as a towing tie-down point only, and the back loops are for the trailer chains. If anything, pull from the rear and put a pin through the square hitch to a snatch strap or tow-rope depending on the pull.

    GL!

The trailer chain hooks on the rear?

DO NOT try to recover using them. They are not rated for that and best case they bend, worst case they break, worster case someone gets hit by said projectile. Get a receiver with shackle or just use a hitch pin

Thanks guys. Will look into a receiver with shackle. Glad I did not tow him. He said to use the chain slots. Now I know better for future reference.

Dont apologize!! This is the good kind of resurrection because getting recovery gear wrong can get people killed or hurt. The wrong kind of resurrection would be like "Will these tires fit?" and "I just put LEDs in my halogen reflectors". :)

I agree with what others said in their responses to you, do NOT use those slots!!! You can also use a tow strap and loop it through the hitch mount and use a trailer hitch pin. Only problem here is that you have to make sure you're pulled straight ahead as tow straps don't like sharp edges.

    https://****************/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/hitch_pin_recovery_howto_05.jpg

    Also:

That hook on the front of your truck is NOT a recovery point. At best it's a tow hook, I believe the factory manual even calls it a tie-down loop. NOT the same thing as a recovery point.

A tow hook is really just for towing short distances on smooth flat ground. Will it work in a pinch to get you unstuck while off-road?

    Sure. *in a pinch*...

They are only attached to ONE side of your frame, so that puts excess stress on your frame. It's best to have a recovery point that distributes the load to both sides of the frame. Also, it's a hook, so it's easy for a strap to become detached.

Ideally, you want either an aftermarket bumper with integrated recovery points (D-ring loops), or a front hitch with a hitch mounted shackle like has been suggested for the rear.

This is what I was referring to, it is like a loop under my skid plate. ((Yes I need to clean up that rust lol))20200309_142640-1.jpg
