    Actually, we're just learning about this in auto tech.
    An engine's maximum speed is limited by the valve springs. At a certain speed, the steel springs can no longer "spring" the valve closed again quickly enough to keep up with the engine. The valve sits open for too long into the compression stroke and the piston hits it, usually bending the valve or doing damage to the rocker arm. The rev limiter stops the engine from ever hitting this point, so you're fine. I've hit mine in 1st and 2nd just to see at what speed it'll do it at (1st= somewhere around 30-35 and 2nd is 65-70, if you were curious). Haven't done 3rd or 4th as 3rd has to be damn near 100 and 4th only God knows where that'll hit :cool:. Anyway glad I could actually apply what I learned in school. (Still waiting on a practical use for the Quadratic Formula :mad: I hate math)
