With regards to the strength of aluminum, just about all of our small boats in the Coast Guard are made of aluminum now and they are more than capable of taking the abuse of the ocean and other boats.

Looking forward to the bumper in aluminum Eric! Takes quite the skilled craftsman to weld aluminum from what I understand.

    Eric,
I'm very interested in an Alum front bumper. Love your front design -- one of the nicest looking, if not the nicest looking I've seen. I'm more expo than a basher, so need the weight savings, but gotta have a winch.

There's an Aluminess group buy closing out 12/31, which I had intended to participate in, but more intersted in yours at this point. Would be great to see the prototype in the near future.

Saw what you said about gusseting and winchablility -- assume you'd make some the core braces that attach to the frame and the through pieces to the winch points 1/2 inch with the enclosed front "skin" 1/4 inch?

    Keep up the great work!

I could do one out of 1" tubing if you're interested. I would need the dimensions in order to build it though since I dont have a DC truck to build it off. Bumper will be done tomorrow. :)

I got the PM Boyd, sorry to not respond, but I felt it was more a heads up to me than anything so I thank you for that.
The end plate didnt line up quite the same on the passenger side vs the drivers side with the fender flare as far as how far it sticks out.
Not sure how that works though since everything is CNC cut identical and all edges line up when assembling the bumper. I also test fit each bumper on my truck before shipping to make sure it fits correctly. Maybe my fender is tweaked slightly?

Eric -- I noticed that you have updated the start of this thread with a few specs on the aluminum bumper. Glad to hear it's getting close.

My question is that you say "Material will be 1/4" aluminum throughout the bumper". Does "throughout the bumper" also mean the main braces that bolt into the frame and, presumeably, come out the front for the shackles??

Can't see that working for winching at all, so I'm hoping you are just referring to the plate bumper components.

Can you confirm that the main braces or supports to the frame will be 1/2" not 1/4". I really hope so, as I want this bumper, and while it doesnt' have to take the abuse for me that it might for some, it really needs to be able to be an effective winch platform. If you're doing something other than 1/2" can you describe how you get an effective bracing with 1/4" so we can understand in that case?

    Thanks!
