I was in the 4th grade when it happened. My teacher was crying and scared, while us kids were confused and too young to fully grasp all that happened that day. I will always remember that awful image of the planes hitting the towers on tv :(

I was teaching 6th grade Social Studies at the time. The kids had a lot of questions that day, as we all did...God be with the families who lost loved ones that day, and God Bless those who serve our country and our communities.

It was 5-ish in the morning in California. I was driving to work, hitting the usual traffic spots, when I switched the radio to get a traffic report. It didn't come on, they were talking about some plane hitting one of the towers. OK, NBD, I was thinking "how the fuck do you miss seeing something that big?" I called my then girlfriend a few times to get her to turn the TV on, then my parents and woke them up.

Between the time I parked my car at the station (working EMS at the time) and getting upstairs, the second plane hit. My partner had the TV on, the other 2 were asleep (the off-going crew). They heard us and we all watched the TV for probably 20 minutes, jaws agape, before our station got called by the dispatcher wondering WTF was going on and why we weren't out yet.

That whole day was just weird. Watching the coverage as we dropped patients in the ER, listening to the Orange Co. Fire Authority over the radio getting their USAR teams rolling, the additional crews getting called in, etc...

I can't believe its been 10 years... the most productive part of my life has occurred during this period. It feels like this just happened but when I think about everything I done in the same timeframe... I'm amazed.

I was on my way to special narcotic court in NYC. Sitting in traffic on the approach to the lincoln tunnel watching the first tower burn and listening the newscaster stating that a private plane hit the tower. Moments later I saw the second plane hit the second tower. At that point I knew it was a planned attack. They closed the tunnel so I sat there in traffic watching the whole disaster unfold. God bless the families of the victims that lost their love ones. May Americans never forget.

I was at a summer internship in San Jose, CA driving to work in my first car that I bought. I turned on the radio and heard everything going on... it was about 0800 PST so about 3 hours after it first started. I thought it was a joke or some random radio talk show. I knew something was up with the gate to work was locked and guarded and I had to wait in line for the first time. Checked CNN on the web and I was like :eek:mg:

I was a sophomore in high school just returned to my school after 1st period autoshop class and walked into my second period class to see the TV was on, first thing that came to mind was cool were going to watch TV today, then I noticed the faces on a mixture of students and teachers all standing there silently watching. I knew the TV being on wasn't for fun at that point.

I was 19 and a sophomore at Alabama. My roommate woke me up saying, "A plane just crashed into one of the WTC towers." We both thought it was an accident at that point. I didn't have class for a few hours, so I sat with him and watched the news for a while.

I'll never forget the feeling in the pit of my stomach when I watched the second plane hit the second tower. Everything changed.

Classes weren't yet cancelled that day, so I went to my first class where my teacher basically said, "We don't know what's going on, and there's nothing we can do about it, so we're going to hold class like we normally would." I was pissed at her for that. The rest of my classes that day were cancelled or skipped.

What I remember most about that day was looking up. I looked at the sky all day, whenever I was outside driving/walking/whatever. I don't know what I expected to see. I just kept looking up.

I opened this thread describing where I was. I eventually got home some 40 hours after I had first left for work that Tuesday. During that period, I reenlisted the next day (purely coincidental as I had planned this weeks in advance) standing in our Disaster Control Center with images of the smoldering rubble of Ground Zero flashing across a a big screen TV playing behind me. No cameras were allowed in this secure area, so I have no picture to look back on but I can still see it clearly in my mind. I was the first one in my organization to reenlist after 9/11 and I remember there was not a dry eye in the packed room. Even my commander could not help himself.

I was supposed to start the NCO Academy at Lackland AFB the following week and all the students received calls saying we were on 'standby,' as they weren't sure we were going to still have class. It ends up, we did. There was a mix of sadness, anger, and determination among the students. At the front of our classroom, we posted a picture of Osama Bin Laden with cross-hairs superimposed over the top of his face. Our way of demonstrating our resolve I guess. I'll never forget my classmates and the discussions we had... it was a surreal time.

I was one year in the Air Force as a SSgt (after 4 years in the USCG) and I was just getting out of the shower when my phone was ringing. My then girlfriend at the time was calling to tell me to turn on the news. I watched in disbelief as the second plane hit. I quickly got into my uniform and got to work. No one was working as someone had brought in a TV and set it up on the table. We were all glued to the screen when the towers finally fell. It was a sickening feeling seeing that. The TAG eventually released us for the day and I drove home. It was eerily quite that entire day when I meet my friend for lunch and we talked about the whole thing. We then learned about the Pentagon and Flight 93.

I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing that day. I also cried that day. I never thought a national "event" could affect me so much. I still get sick to my stomach every time I see a picture of the burning towers. I made myself watch the 9/11 doc the next year. It was hard to watch, but I felt it was necessary to see the story from that perspective.

To all here that were directly affect by that day, you have my sympathy and condolences.

And to COL Volk. Sir, you and your people have my respect for whay you did that day. Thank you for sharing your story.
