Just curious - when I use factory remote start on my TRD OR via the key fob (lock - lock - hold lock), the truck remote starts just fine. However, when I unlock the truck to actually get in a couple minutes later, the engine always shuts off and I have to start it again. Is there a secret way to get in without killing the engine? Seems silly to shut it off right when you’re ready to drive away...

If you're referring to the shutoff when you open the door, no you cannot disable it. It's a Toyota safety feature and does not matter what type of remote start you install. The only way you can get around it is if you have a version with a key and not push button start.

It has to switch over to the smart key for authentication, theres no solution for this.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
Pretty sure every manufacturer has something similar built into their remote starter feature.

Before my Tacoma, I had a Subaru Tribeca and a Ford Explorer with remote starts. And both of them turned off when you opened the door. It's to keep someone from being able to steal your car while you're warming it up.

My wife’s 2021 Subaru Ascent allows us to get in the car after remote start has been initiated. We unlock the car, get in, then press the break and start button simultaneously. Engine stays on and we drive away.

So the engine cutoff is a Toyota thing.

My wife’s wrangler lets you get in and mess with stuff, but you have to hit the brake and the start button before getting out of park.

On a side note I cannot for the life of me start my 2021 pro with the fob. Only with Toyota connect and my phone. Is it possible my truck doesn’t have the remote start that the fob uses, and only the app version?

Also, the Toyota app sucks. It won’t keep me logged in. I have to log in every time I use it.

Most have something. But a lot of them are much more streamlined. RAM has to detect the key and requires you to push the button, if I remember correctly.

That being said, many also haven't seemed to figure out a way to not allow the vehicle drive away without the key as long as you can get into the truck. I saw this happen on a Silverado and tested it on my Tacoma to find the same results.

Not helpful when it’s raining and cold (normal use case 6 months of the year in Seattle)

It’s definitely not industry standard - I’ve had other cars and trucks that allowed remote start with the key fob and then drive off without shutting down. They just wouldn’t shift out of park without the key fob being close by to prevent theft. I’ll chock it up to a slightly annoying idiosyncrasy of this truck.

Funny you say that. I installed the accessorides remote start on my wife’s 2019 4Runner and once it’s running, you just get in and put your key in, turn it to “on” and put it in gear and go…

Yep. In lots of different variations. None have worked for me. But the app fires it right up.

this might have something to do with your other lock-related settings. I think I remember messing with those at some point and one of the settings seemed to prevent remote start from working

Settings I access through the radio? I’ll check that out but don’t remember anything about remote start.

Pretty easy stuff. Just remember to keep rear slider open. Open shell door, tear up knees on tailgate and you slide across bed. Pass arms and head first through open slider window and plop yourself down into back seat. From here it pretty easy to wrangle oneself into the driver seat. Assuming this process didn’t take more than 15 minutes you can now sit there with your truck running (you still can’t go anywhere but you will be in your truck with it running).
