My remote start wasn’t working so I ended up calling Toyota and they sent me over to some tech support and reset the account tied to my truck remotely. Then the remote start worked. Might be worth a call to put the ball in their court. If I’ve got key fob remote start on a TRD OR then it’s likely you have it in the Pro.

Thanks, I’ll try that later. It’s not a big deal since I will use the app, just making me scratch my head. Plus if my wife uses it or I borrow it out I’d like it to work.

How about installing a remote start on a 2016 Tacoma, anyone have any idea? I bought one online a few years ago and couldn’t ever get it to work, I would program it correctly, it would flash as it should. Then when I would try to start it all it would do is run the fuel pump and that’s it..... The company even sent me another control module for the remote start, assuming it was the issue. That did nothing either and I eventually just gave up on the idea completely.

    I believe it’s a “Fortin Evo” unit.

I second @VB25 . I've got the basic N2 remote starter, no frills, on an MT, and I can open the door, slide the key in, and get moving. Alternatively, the truck will stay on for a bit when I take the key out and only shuts off when (after the key is removed) all the doors are shut. This means If I need my key for something, say the tailgate because I forgot something back there I can set the remote start sequence, remove the key, truck stays on, go fetch whatever from the bed, and put the key back in and get going to wherever. I haven't tried to run the power outlet in the back without the key in yet - but none of the other accessories stay on(radio turns off, etc) when I remove the key so not sure if that would work.

I love my N2 and use it on the daily. It is so convenient. There is even a valet setting but I don't remember how to set it

I found this odd as well. My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee had factory remote start and it would not shut off when you opened the door. The system required you to push the start/stop button with the key fob in the vehicle before you could press the brake or shift into gear. It is obviously possible and I find it strange so many manufacturer’s can’t offer it. I used my remote start for my Tacoma in -20F temps the other day and when I got in it wouldn’t start again. I let it sit for a few minutes the tried again and it barely started and smelled of fuel badly in the cabin. I have a ‘22 with 1000 miles on it!

That's why batteries are rated by Cold-Crank-Amperage (CCA) which is typically higher than what the load when temperature is nominal, ideal and alternator charged via driving. This is because the cold plays a role in a battery's performance. Cold weather degrades it by 30-60%. That's huge. That's why is something needs 200A to run, you size it in theory based on start up load or demand since that's spike for a second until the vehicle is running and being driven will kill an incorrectly size battery quickly and viscously and the first engine crank that fails, will take away some more of it's ability to start...until it's time for a jump or charge. A battery should never be drained to that extent. It will need to be recharged and calibrated...but I assure you, it won't be the same ever again and you'll live in fear of it dying anywhere anytime again for the time it took you to load groceries with the door open.

Toyota undersized the OEM batteries. They suck from the get go and don't last too long with normal use...and they know it or else they would deny remedies for re-charge or swap out due to it being a "wear n tear" part.

Our 2016 Nissan Murano doesn’t shut off either. I love the truck, but that has been one annoying “feature.”

The timing of the lock-lock-lock sequence is extremely finicky. You probably haven't gotten it "just right" yet. And even after you figure it out, it's still a PITA. Always takes me a couple of tries.

I have experienced this also with my 2018 with a remote start. In really cold temps if I start it, let it run 15 minutes, then go out 5 minutes later to just listen to it sputter a few times then start. Its almost as if when the remote start shuts off, fuel still flows into the engine and floods it.

I know this is a old post and many if not every site I've searched says it can't be worked around. My question is is the shut off initiated by the marker light blink when you open the car? I know most aftermatket units use the brake light as a shutdown signal. Is there no one that could read a wiring diagram on the remote start to determine what makes the computer shut off? Once we know the signal should be able to bypass it or redirect it.

Not to my knowledge since you can lock and unlock the door without issue and there's no way to activate the brake lights before the truck would have shut off anyway. The only real workaround is having a version with a keyed ignition such as a lower trim level or manual transmission.

I bought a 2023 and was hoping this was addressed and fixed .. found a 7 month old video basically saying toyota was aware this was annoying and was going to address it .. well I guess mine isn't the 'selected model' they referred to .. I honestly hate that the engine shuts off just so you can start it back up again a second later

press the lock button three times and hold the lock button on the third press until your lights flash 5 times then let go. Took me a few times to figure it out too now I count how many times the lights flash after I press lock twice and hold the third press.

Also I recently upgraded from an 09’ taco to a 2021 and can’t figure out how to update my profile so disregard the fact that my profile says I am an 09’ tacoma TRD owner.
