Did they add remote start as a factory feature yet? I can't seem to find it anywhere on these 3rd gen reviews... it just seems like it's high-time to add that for those of us in colder climates.

I dont want the toyota factory remote start. I have it on my runner and when you open door, vehicle shuts off... Safety feature and it requires you to start vehicle twice each time you use it.

this is correct... a lot, not sure how many auto makers kill the engine so you have to re-start once your in it, whether it be opening door or I remember factory GM's did it after you put the ignition key in. How that's more safety not sure... guess it verifies a "person" is actually in the car before it moves I guess... Soon Dr. Google cars will drive us while we read the paper anyway so all things evolve I suppose.

Quite frankly that seems like a minor inconvenience when compared to getting into a car that's -10 F in the winter...

Also I'd prefer one built-in rather than splicing into the cables to put an aftermarket one in.

Some models have a quick heater in them. Electric heat grid until it gets to operating temp. I'd like to see how well it works once it gets a little colder

Seems silly...had an '08 F-150 with factory remote start. It would kill it if you hit the pedals without the key in and turned to on. My manual transmission upbringing had me always pressing the brakes before turning the key, but I got used to it.

I think the reason for that feature is to prevent theft. Imagine you remote start your vehicle, and while you are in your house waiting for it to warm up, someone breaks into the truck and drives it away. This way once the door is opened, it shuts off. What would be better is giving you 30 seconds to put the key in the ignition after opening the door. However, with these keyless start cars, that is not possible, so I guess this is the next best way.

My (soon to be traded) Wrangler's factory remote start doesn't kill the ignition when you open the door or otherwise. I'm interested to see how aftermarket remote starts work with the push button start system. It'd be nice not to have to tack on a second fob on my keychain though.

My 14' Taco had it and if you stepped on the brake without the key in the ignition it would kill the engine. It was seemless once you put the key in the ignition so then should implement that with how close your wireless key is to the ignition. I paid for remote start on my 2016 which is guaranteed for me but they have to figure out how to make it work... Said it's a month or two out.

Was it ever an option from the factory?

Maybe they're working on making a modern remote start like everyone else. Having the vehicle turn off when you open the door is silly and no one else does that.

I had a remote start on my 4runner as well. It would only die if you put your foot on the brake. I would get in and put the key in the ignition to put it in the on position and instinctively hit the brake and it would shut off. I thought it was a dumb feature to have to start it twice every time until I realized it was user error and all I had to do was turn the key to the on position sans brake and it would stay running.

dealer installed option. In fact, the dealer near me throws it in free at least once per month when they are trying to move vehicles.

I'm driving a 2014 Avalon Limited and it turns off when I touch the door handle and I have to restart when I get in.

You could get in, unhook the brake switch, and drive away until time runs out.

Just a PITA and the fact that it beats on your starter.

Kill engine if you hit brake pedal before key is turned on is an anti theft measure.

My aftermarket remote starts would kill the engine by depressing brake without key turned on (see above). Not sure about smart key system.

Same here. I hate having to start vehicle twice each morning.
