Right, though if you're smart you'll have locked the doors using the hard key you pulled from the fob before you walked away.

I haven't tested what happens if someone reaches in through a window and unlocks the door while it's running and you're away from the vehicle. I'll try that out at lunch.

It's still all a non-issue for me; the only times I'd leave it running while I stepped away would be when my two dogs were sitting in there and I had it on to run the AC. No stranger who values his skin is going to jump in with them.

No that's not the way it works in my car. If the fob is away from the vehicle it continues to run until you stop, put it in park, and once in park if you touch the brake pedal, which you would have to do to put it back in drive, it shuts off.

I hear what you're saying it would definitely be crazy dangerous if it worked the way you interpreted what I wrote. My bad for not making it clear, if you are parked, engine running, and walk away from the vehicle and someone jumps into it to steal it, as soon as they touch the brake pedal to put it in drive, it shuts down.

Ya I can imagine someone driving along the interstate and a child or soon to be Crazy Ex tosses the fob out the window...... It would be insane if it just shut off. But like I said that's not how mine works.

Gave this a try, though I didn't take the remote any further away than twenty feet as I didn't want to deal with the loud honking if it tripped an alarm.

With the drivers window down and leaving the engine running while locking the doors with the key (from inside the fob) and setting the fob down away from the truck, I was able to unlock and open the door, depress the brake, and shift into reverse and move the truck with it remaining running. This is on a 2015 TRDOR with PTS.

So yes, if you leave it running someone can drive it away, even if you lock the doors (though they'd then have to break a window).

For me this isn't a concern as I'd only leave it running if I had my dogs in the car, or if I was with my wife while I ran in somewhere while she wait. As sweet and loving as all three of them are, anyone up to no good would quickly regret their poor choice of climbing into the car.

After talking to the guys at DEI and Magnadyne Friday with the installers it looks as if Toyota Tacoma wont let the override of the PTS to the current programming as it has to do with being able to override the remotes...

Came across this fact as well... (believe it or not, i think it was on a RAV4 forum)...Please post a thread when you get specifics.
*I will not pay for a remote start that kills the engine when the doors are open.

i have the factory remote start in mine. i got it in the deal because they brought me a different truck than the one i signed papers for. it does shut off after either 10 mins or when a door is opened but it is still nice when its negative temps out and the cabins already warm and your seat is heated up. one of the reasons it shuts off is safety the other is because the computer tracks your economy for every time the truck starts and runs so with it shutting off when you open the door it gives you an accurate economy reading that would otherwise have 10 mins of fuel burning with no miles taken.

You'll help a LOT of people if you'd post the specifics of your factory remote start.

I know my dealer two months ago stated that there is no factory remote start for the Tacoma, and others here have posted similar stories.

sorry for such a late reply but the factory remote start as far as i know is something that every vehicle is capable of having from the factory. if that isnt the case then all they are hooking up is a receiver and syncing it with the remote. when i dropped my truck off at the dealer i only gave them one remote with it. it is a push start. they had it for a day and when i received it back the next day i was told that only one remote would work since both were not dropped off. my girlfriend was confused at which remote was hers so she tried starting them both and both work so they arent doing anything to the remotes. the remote start isnt something they advertise either. you have to ask for it like i did. other than that i am not sure why they would tell people there is no remote start unless you have a manual tranny. i am not completely sure but i slightly recall reading that in the united states it is illegal for the manufacturer to install remote starts on manuals for fear of it being left in gear during remote start.

When I was ordering my truck I specifically asked about remote start and they came back a couple days later claiming surprise that there wasn't one for the 2017 Tacoma. I had money in hand, so the dealer had plenty of reason to make it happen. Mine is an automatic, so availability for manual transmission vehicles is irrelevant.

Could you elaborate on why you think your remote start is Toyota OEM rather than one of the aftermarket remote-starts that integrate with the factory keyfob? Perhaps a part number or option code on your paperwork? Something I can use to try to track it down?

    Thanks.

Thanks. Can you point me towards the install instructions for the Tacoma? When I'd looked into that part number before all I came up with was installation for the Tundra, and with the degree to which you had to tear into the dash & plug into various things I'd be a bit leery of just doing a plug-and-pray without further assurance Tacoma compatibility so as to avoid frying something.

There are 4 different threads about remote starts on the 3rd Gen forum, dealer installed the 4Runner remote start on mine prior to delivery for me, factory fobs push lock button 3 times it starts!

Okay and... your point is what exactly? I've read all of them.

Excellent. What's the part number? Any info on install instructions? Or perhaps the name and contact info of the individual at the dealer who did the install? That would be helpful info.

BTW, the lock-button-three-times seems common to aftermarket systems as well, so it's not a clear indicator of OEM vs aftermarket.

Getting usable info on any OEM system install is kind of like chasing after a unicorn here...

I was pointing out a lot of info has already been given in these other remote threads, since there is always somebody saying research before asking! That being said, no I don't have a part # or installation instructions as I bought the truck before I ever knew TW forum existed. I due know it is a 4Runner remote start do to the salesman telling me I had 2 options aftermarket or the factory 4Runner one. I chose the factory with factory fobs. Dealership name Adams Toyota tele# 1-816-358-7600 located in Lees Summit, MO (KC metro area). I believe it cost about $600.00 installed.

Yeah, that was the issue -- talking to my dealer they couldn't find anything non-aftermarket that they could sell me.

When I have a chance (this really isn't a priority, and I'm likely to go towards the Fortin unit anyway) I'll give the folks a call that @oldman52 provided.

yeah, still waiting for a work around for my 2106 Taco. Had viper installed and shuts down when door is opened or brake pressed. What a stupid feature.
There must be a fix for this somewhere.

If it exists, you will be the very first person to find it. The companies who make and sell remote starts haven't solved it. You could stand to make some money selling your fix to them. Best of luck.

I was able to bypass it shutting off by opening the door by un-grounding the screw on the door strike. But still shuts off when you depress the brake.
    One step closer......
