Remote tailgate lock question....

Will the key work even if the actuator fails? I would think so.

Another interesting thing I learned about this lock on my truck: the tailgate lock ONLY works with key fob. If I try to unlock the doors with the unlock button on my door, it doesn't work. Is this normal?

 

Yes. They both operate the same mechanism but will work independently.

 

Odd. Mind you my experience is with the factory add-on kit, which has a harness extender that plugs into the passenger front door lock/unlock circuit, so it works whenever the passenger door is locked/unlocked, whether by button or fob. Mine's in a 2019 Sport but the kit is universal - though you do have to order for the bed size as wire lengths differ.

 

Mine (OEM) works in sync with buttons, remote and keyhole entry. If I double press the remote unlock button, it unlocks. If I double turn the key in the door keyhole, it unlocks. If I unlock once with my remote and unlock doors with the button inside the door, it unlocks.

The only bad behavior is if I use the remote to unlock everything and only open the tailgate, everything will lock by itself a few moments later (thus if I leave the key in the bed and close the tailgate, I’m out of luck - bed cover on and locked truck/tailgate).

It's tied into the front passenger door lock. You need to hit the button that unlocks all the doors. If it's doing this with the fob hit unlock twice. You can change the lock/unlock settings through your headunit.

 

Wait... Do all tacomas come with remote unlock tail gates? Mine doesn't unlock/lock unless I stick the key in. I just got my truck last week and still learning all the stuff it has (trd off road premium)

 

No the locks are accessories.

 

I don’t need to resort to ghetto solutions if I get there, I’ll just use the other key to unlock.

 

I would imagine that's the "fail safe" method to use...the capability isn't removed after installing the tailgate lock.

I understand the lock is useless to protect against those who really want to get in (and know the trick), but my statement was about my own problem of locking myself out.
